Trieste, Italy....worth a visit?

Trieste, Italy....worth a visit?
Next year, I will be going to Venice, the friend who may be coming with me would like to also visit Trieste since her ancestors come from that region. I'm scouring the internet today for information on Trieste...but would like first hand impressions from people who have been there...what is it like? Interesting? industrial city? etc.....
Since I have decided to stay on this board and I know that there are many people who remain here who have a lot of knowledge (yes, a lot of people on TOP do have vast knowledge), I thought I would ask about Trieste from all of you who have remained or are "bi" as was discussed over there

Hi lyb, My dear hub and I took train from Venice to Trieste. We visited the Maxmillian castle and it was gorgeous (decided the audio guide was boring). We took a bus from the train station and found a kind person who actually worked at the castle who sent us in the correct direction off of the bus, and walked along the water back to the town center where the area along the waterfront was gorgeous and the buildings were more Austrian looking than Meditraean.
We ran out of time to see another castle and church (check guides of what to see).
We felt like we spent almost too much train time so go as early as poss. I'd also say take taxis if you can as they'll save time while you are there. This is a real personal call. I'm glad we went but don't feel the urge to return. Any other responses?

Yes, I've done a search, and it actually worked!! I'm reading through those as well. I've read through a couple of tour books so far and frankly it looks ...okay but not all that exciting...I personally think I would rather go to the Dolomites for a day or so....I'll have to talk more to my friend about it...luckily we have plenty of time since we would be going in early October of next year.
But before I decide for sure, I have a lot more research to do ......

Jan Morris, probably the best living travel writer, has written a book called "Trieste and the Meaning of Nowhere" -- not a very encouraging title, I agree... Still, if you plan to do a lot of research, it might be worth your while to borrow it from a library or buy it (it's out in paper).
