I am trying to plan a trip for July 2012 to include Venice, Ljubljana and Rovinj. I've found a ferry from Venice to Rovinj (and other direction). I see trains Venice to Trieste, which looks like I might want to spend a few days there. My problem is finding out how to get around - by public tansportation - between Rovinj and Ljubljana and Trieste. I've found one bus per day between Rovinj and Ljubljana. Is that likely to be all there is? And what about buses from Trieste to Ljubljana. I know there must be some but googling gets me various sites none of which give me a schedule. I don't need exact times right now, just want to be assured this is possible (and not in the middle of the night, as the only train seems to be).
I am only going to book flights at this point but don't want to get over there and find you can't get from one point to another. I am considering flying into Venice and then doing: Venice to Trieste to Ljubljana to Rovinj (ferry back to Venice). Or I could fly into Ljubljana and do: Ljubljana to Trieste to Rovinj (ferry to Venice). Which of these makes more sense and is it indeed possible?

You can get by bus from Trieste to LJUBLJANA or Rovinj. Bus station is adjacent to train station. Venice to Trieste is an easy 2 hrs train trip (they go quite often)

Thanks
I just took the bus from Trieste to Rovinj. It left at 2:30 and it stopped on the side of the road and a guy from the bus company picked me up. It was OK. The actual bus that stopped in Rovinj left Treste around 6:00pm. There could have been morning busses but I caught the 10am train out of Venice.
Everyone at the bus station was really nice. I guess Trieste is nice but I was there for 2 plus hours and ready to leave after 4 days in Venice. Maybe there is more to see but looked like a small italian city to me.
Many more buses run from Pula.
Trieste was quite a surprise for us with modern city and wonderful historic quarters.
I took a train from Ljubljana to Trieste, so I assume you can go the other way. I took a bus from Trieste to Rovinj. It left in the morning.
There is no direct train between Ljubljana and Trieste these days. You have to make 1-2 changes. Direct buses run a few times a day as mentioned above, probably the best way if the timing works out. Next best option might be a bus between Trieste and Sezana, Slovenia and a train between Sezana and Ljubljana. There's also a creative option to take the funicular between Trieste and Villa Opicina, and then a taxi between Villa Opicina and Sezana.
