Trier to Koblenz
We will be in Germany this summer and have heard it is a beautiful drive along the Mosel from Trier to Koblenz. Suggestions from others who have done this, time to allow, places to stop (perhaps Bernkastel?) and where to stay in Trier are welcome. We will leave southern Bavaria (Oberstaufen) in the morning, so we welcome ideas on a route to get to Trier.

it is a lovely drive... each of the small towns is a wonder unto itself... i would choose one of those towns to stay in rather than trier... there are many hotels, inns and much good food and wine..
not sure how much time you would have after a drive from the south however... 2-3 days is fun in that area..

It is a gorgeous drive along the Mosel from Trier to Koblenz. I am not clear from your post if you are planning to do this on the same day you are driving from Oberstaufen. If so, plan on getting up before dawn and spending the day in the car. If you follow the Mosel it is a very windy route and you can be delayed by other sightseers. I suggest you go to www.viamichelin.com and plot your route. Their recommended route takes 6 hours. Their scenic route takes nearly 11 hours. I tend to be a slower traveler and for myself I would stay in Trier or Cochem, if you like mid-size towns or Bernkastel-Kues for a smaller town, for three nights so I could day trip up and down the Mosel.

I assume you are driving.
Is it possible that you can divide up the trip? It's a but much for one day driving and enjoying the countryside.
Here is a scenic itinerary:
Oberstaufen on Route B-308 (Deutsche Alpenstrasse)west to Autobahn A-96, going south. In 4km, just before Lindau, get on the B-31 and drive it along Lake Constance (Bodensee) to Frierichshafen -Meersburg-Ueberlingen- Stockach - Autobahn A-98 to the Autobahnkreuz (Intersection) Singen, and from there to the Horb exit. From there head over to Doirnstetten and Freudenstadt, and take the B-462 north. This is the Black Forest Valley Road. It takes you to the Autyobahn A-5 north at Rastatt. Now There is much more you could see of the Black First, butr you simply don't hgave the time if yiu want to limit tyourself to 2 days of driving to Trier.
On the A-5, go north as far as the Autobahnkreuz Walldorf, and follow tghe signs to Speyer. I would spend the night there.
The next day, drive from Speyer to Neustadt an der Weinstrasse, take B-39 to the Autobahn A-6. Take itr west to Landstuhl and the Autobahn A-62 . IIt intersects with the Autobahn A-1, which takes you to the Trier exit. If you want to take a minor detour, follow the Weinstreasse from Neustadt to Bad Ruerkheim, and head from there to the A-6
It's been a while since I lastvstayed in Trier, soI am nor current on the hotel situation.
For the scenic way to Koblenz, follow along the southern bank of the Mosel, and give yiurself lots of time.

Oohhps, I hit the submit button before I made my corrections. Here are the key typos:
Friedrichshafen, Dornstetten, Black Forest, Bad Duerckheim , and many more typos that are less crucial (i.e., they shouldn't get you get lost)

Try to stay a couple nights along the Mosel if possible. You will want to get out and stroll, watch the river traffic and enjoy the slow life there, maybe visiting a winery.
One of my favorite trips. There are so many cute villages, hard to name just one.
I would highly suggest a stop up to Berg Eltz.
There are wonderful inexpensive guest houses everywhere, but also off the main road up into the hills a bit along the Mosel . They abound and are about 25-30E/person with breakfast.
