Trenitalia extends 50% Child's fare on RESERVED trains to 15 years of age
Trenitalia has just modified the rule for the 50% child's fare, extending it to children up to the age of 15 years, 0 days (from 12 years, 0 days).
New rule: Children up to 15 years, 0 days qualify for 50% of the "BASE" fare on Trenitalia RESERVED trains.
THE AGE EXTENSION TO 15 YEARS, 0 DAYS DOES NOT APPLY TO THE UNRESERVED "regionale" trains, which (at least for the moment) retain the prior rule of 12 years, 0 days.
NOTE: Sometimes, the "ECONOMY" and "SUPER ECONOMY" fares will be LOWER than the Child's fare, so you must always check all offers. However, these other promotional fares have restrictions which the "BASE" fare does not have.
NOTE: Children up to the age of 4 years, 0 days CONTINUE to travel FREE on ALL Trenitalia trains, WITHOUT a ticket and WITHOUT a guaranteed seat.
Here is the new rule, as reported in a Trenitalia press release:
I bambini diventano grandi
Riduzioni fino al 50% sul prezzo del biglietto per i ragazzi che viaggiano sulle Frecce, e gli altri treni a media e lunga percorrenza, fino al compimento del 15° anno d’età.
The new rule takes effect on Sunday, December 9, 2012.

By way of comparison, ITALO TRENO's policies on "children" are not quite as liberal as those of Trenitalia:
1. Children ("ragazzi") BETWEEN the ages of 4 years, 0 days and 14 years, 365 days qualify for the following discounts:
"BASE" fare: 25%
"ECONOMY" fare: 50%
"LOW COST" and "PROMO": no discount
2. Toddlers ("bambini") UNDER the age of 4 years, 0 days (i.e. up to 3 years, 365 days) travel FREE, without a guaranteed seat. There must be at least one paying adult for each toddler, and additional toddlers must pay the higher fee for older children.
SEE: Paragraph 7.1 of ITALO TRENO Official Tariff.
NOTE that ITALO TRENO (contrary to Trenitalia) does NOT apply the Child's discount on the Child's 15th birthday, nor the Toddler's discount on the Toddler's 4th birthday!!!
HOWEVER, ITALO TRENO (contrary to Trenitalia) does give a 50% Child's discount on its "ECONOMY" ticket.
Can you keep all of these rules perfectly memorized?

Look what a good job ITALO TRENO does in explaining its "Child's fare" on a clear and concise web page:
