TravelSmith Warehouse Sale!

This is the annual opportunity to score some fabulous discounts. It's early this year: April 30, May 1, and May 2. Best selection Friday, best prices in the last few hours Sunday. Exhibit Hall at the Marin Civic Center, just off 101. If you're coming for the sale, email me and maybe we can meet up. (No, this is NOT an ad. I have no affiliation with TravelSmith.)

I drove a long way to Oakland for one of these several years ago. The stuff was pretty crappy. Hope this one is better for you. Any way for you to check it out first?

It depends what you're looking for. I've gone the past 3 years and have found great stuff, but you definitely have to look through a lot of not-so-great stuff.

Last year I bought a pair of Santana lined, waterproof short boots for about $30 (very useful for winter trips to NY). A full-length raincoat with detachable hood that packs in its own pouch for $60 (great for spring trips to Europe). A white 100%cotton "no-iron" shirt. A padded, reversible jacket that stuffs into a small pouch for $60. And more!

Geez, can we attend the sale via the internet if we live on the East Coast?

Lauren, I think they have these warehouse sales annually in various cities around the US. You might check their website or call their 800# and ask.

It's Monday, hard for my brain to function, so it took a while to find the sale page.

From the main TravelSmith page go to Customer Servise, then to Outlet Store, and after scrolling down they list Warehouse Sales.

Why do I see only CA stores and sales?

Faina, that may be all that's scheduled right now. Last year the guy running it told me they have them in Dallas and a few other cities. From the website:

"For more information please call Liquid Events (event producer) 415.979.1597."

Oh, so they have "liquid" events too? And I thought they only sell clothing. I'll be there!

Thanks for the heads up, Marilyn. I may actually be around that weekend when celebrate our son's birthday in the area. We'd probably drive up Sunday morning. Is there any place for a non-shopping husband to hang out around the Civic Center? Isn't there a farmer's market there on Sunday?

Hi Betsy! Yes, there is a fabulous farmer's market Sunday morning at the Civic Center. Usually a bit of entertainment, too, like a guitarist or something. And the warehouse sale does have tons of men's things as well. There's also a multiplex just on the other side of the freeway, in Northgate mall, with about 16 movies playing at any given time.

In my observation, "travel" clothing is overpriced and awful. LLBean, LandsEnd attire is FAR superior. Not to mention Shoes.com - incredible in every way.

djkbooks, chacun à son goût. These things are certainly not overpriced at up to 70% off retail, and I've always found a few gems. I'm not an easy fit, so I really like to try before I buy.

While I may not be on the West Coast for the big TravelSmith sale, this thread did motivate me to buy a few things for my upcoming Russia trip. I finally got one of those vests with the pockets and that "indispensible travel dress" that I have been wanting for some time. So, thanks, Marilyn.

Always happy to assist in stimulating the retail economy, Lauren!

By the way, I just got a postcard announcement and it says "Overstocks and catalog returns." The hours are 10-7 Friday, 10-5 Sat & Sun.

Well, usually 70% off retail and "overstocks" means stuff of no interest to anyone else, or returns.

Actually, DJKBooks, if you bothered to look at the TravelSmith website, you would see some overstock bargains there that are quite nice--if you could overcome your knee jerk dislike of TravelSmith and propensity to just disagree for the sake of disagreement. If you do not want to purchase things from TravelSmith, you don't have to but why do you have to put them down if you don't buy anything from them--nevermind the lack of experience with their merchandise?

I got one item I bought at a bargain price and I got a 10% off coupon as well for future purchases.

Actually, djk, I would bet that this warehouse sale alone must do something in the neighborhood of $250,000 in a 3-day weekend. It's in a large exhibit hall, it's jam-packed most of the day, and there are lines of people waiting to pay who are holding armloads and bags full of clothing. So to say the items are "of no interest to anyone," is clearly dead wrong.

I don't like all of their clothes by any means, but they do have some stylish pieces that travel exceptionally well. And then there is the thrill of the treasure hunt -- I'm always a sucker for that!

I'm not trying to convince you to buy anything, I just don't know why you feel the need to put it down.
