Travelling outside of Stockholm

We are spending three days in Stockholm the first week of October. I have done some genealogy and found out the areas my great grandparents grew up in. Our three days in Stockholm I have narrowed down what I want to do. We will have already been in Northern Europe for two weeks, so no jet lag involved.

Our thoughts are, renting a car and driving towards Nordmark, spending one night in Filipstad or nearby. Explore that area
The next day make our way up to Borlange, Stora tuna area. for the night and spend time exploring there.
The third day we would take our time to drive back south to stay at a hotel near the Arlanda airport for a flight out in the morning.

My question is, given this route are there towns/areas close by that we should see? Better places to stay nearby where we could still explore these towns? I can't find any trip reports or much info on areas north of Stockholm.
Thanks very much.
