travelling in Italy during Easter
We will be in Italy (Rome and Umbria) the week before and including Easter 2005 and I am wondering how the holiday will impact our plans. Are there closings or other occurrences that we should be aware of?

It would probably be very interesting to visit some town known for its Holy Week processions on the Thursday or Friday before Easter. I'm aware of several towns and cities in Sicily that are known to have particularly interesting ones, with ancient folk traditions mixed in with the religious, but there may be some good ones in Umbria, too.

I don't know, but I would guess that Spello might. (Assisi probably does, too, but it must be terribly crowded.) If you don't get info on this forum re Holy Week processions in Umbria, you might try asking about it on the Slowtrav forum or the Italian Language forum (AboutCom) or both places. There are some people on both forums who live in Umbria.

I've been in Rome a few times at during Holy Week and think it's a great time to be there. When we were in Bevagna last October, a sacristan in one of the churches showed us the life-size figures of Christ and the Virgin Mary that are carried during the procession during Holy Week. Unfortunately, I don't know which day the procession occurs.
