travelling from london to italy
Hi i need some advice, i will b travelling with my family that includes a 6mth old and a 3 yr old. We will arrive in London but plan to see Paris, Milan and La Spezia. We have 2 weeks, we intend to stay at least 3 days in London before we head to Italy.
So if we were to fly to Milan then drive to La Spezia, after that would it be too hard to drive all the way to Paris?Or its cheaper and easier to fly in Milan then take the train out from La Spezia and make our way to Paris?
Im just not sure which would be better given that i am travelling with to kids. Im guessing at least do one leg on a flight and the other either driving or by train, suggestions pls.
Oh by the way its gonna be our 1st time travelling to Europe.

If you look into drop off fees (assuming you are renting a car) you will find that to is VERY expensive to rent a car in one country and drop it in another. It makes more sense to fly given the distances and costs.
Be sure you book your flights from home into London and out of the last city you are in to avoid having to backtrack to London.

Rather than waiting for others to answer general price question, why not use the web resources to compute time and the cost of several options on your own?
For car travel, you can use the Google map to get travel times, www.viamichelin.com gives toll and gas cost estimates, go to rental car sites such as www.autoeurope.com to get rental cost estimates; and go to budget airline sites to get flight fares.
For train travel, this site is easiest to use:
reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/e
For pricing:
France: www.voyages-sncf.com
Italy: www.trenitalia.com
U.K.-France: www.eurostar.com
Backtracking usually add cost and time, but the get the actual cost and time estimates using the web sites.
London-Milan-La Spezia-Paris involves backtracking to North. I would play with more linear flows without backtracking such as:
La Spezia-Milan-Paris-London; London-Paris-Milan-La Spezia; Paris-London-Milan-La Spezia, etc.

In addition to flights in/out Milan, also check flights from London into Pisa or Genoa (both contected easily by train to La Spezia) and then from either of those cities to Paris. I suspect flying from the La Spezia area to Paris will be surely faster and perhaps cheaper than driving or even the train.
