Flying from Los Angeles next March. Any suggestions for the best route? Train from Geneva or Zurich or is there a better way?
Also, I am consering the Hotel Julen or Monte Rosa would welcome opinions? 3 of us snowboard, should we lug or rent? We may have an extra day on the front or back end, would welcome any cool suggestions.

My First Trip to Provence and Paris...Loved!!!

marc,
Train travel time from Zurich airport is about 5 hours with two, three, or four changes; from Geneva airport it's 3.34 hours with one change. I guess I would add up the total travel time from LA-Zurich-Zermatt or LA-Geneva-Zermatt and pick the quickest, no? Train schedules are at www.rail.ch
I like to rent skis there -- I get to try out the newest innovations each time. I don't know if snowboards have the same kind of technology turn-over. Ski rentals (the top brands) cost about $100 - $150 for a week; again, I don't know how snowboards compare. I'm sure you can get a link to a rental company from the Zermatt website.
I've never been to either hotel you mention, but people here have raved about the Julen. Do a text search here.
If I were you with one extra day, I'd just spend it hiking in the area; there are numerous spectacular hikes around Zermatt.
Great luck!

We have plans to go to Zermatt in November and plan to go from Geneva by train (the route is shorter) and then leave via Zurich. We wanted the Julen but it was booked. Another beautiful hotel is the Zermatterhof - stayed there seven years ago. The Monte Rosa is also beautiful, We are not skiers, but enjoy to the max "apres-ski". If you go thru zurich, you could spend a night in Lucerne or Interlaken.
