Traveling to Zermatt in September

We just moved to Zurich last month from Seattle, Wa and want to get out and explore Switzerland. We are not big skiers but definitely want to see Zermatt and the Matterhorn. We will go for the weekend toward the end of September. Will this be a good time to go? We thought we'd go on a hike. Any suggestions of places to stay, and places to hike? We'd like a nice, clean, spacious room (myself, husband and two teen girls) with great views of the Matterhorn if possible. Will everything be open in September? Thanks for any advice! We are new to traveling

There used to be a website www.zermatt.ch which described hotels, etc. (actually it still exists so you can take a look).

Assume you know you can only drive as far as Tesch (the village below Zermatt) where these is a massive car park.

The only possible difficulty with viewing the peak is sometimes it can be clear weather in the village but the actually peak might be shrouded in clouds. There is a cam in the Gornergrat railway waiting room that shows the peak and any obscurity.

Regardless, the place is worth a visit if only to be up closer to the top and to look out over the Monte Rosa Massif.

September should be a great time to visit Zermatt. Our family always stays at the Hotel-Garni Daniela (http://www.zermatt.net/daniela/) when we visit. Staying at the Daniela allows you to use the indoor pool facilities at the Julen Hotel since they are both owned by the same Julen family. The trip (cable cars) up to Klein Mastterhorn is very fun. From the top you can see down into Italy. The train to Gornergrat is equally fun. You can even hike (walk) between some of the stops. We enjoyed walking through the Zermatt Museum also.

Growing up in the "shadow of the Matterhorn" at Disneyland, I had to visit Zermatt on my first trip to Switzerland. It did not disappoint. I love Zermatt. I have visited four times.

You are so lucky to relocate to Zurich. Switzerland is my favorite country. Have fun exploring Europe!
