Traveling to Rome for a Month

Hi! I am going to be traveling to Rome and staying with friends for a month in January. Are there any places/ weekend trips I should take while i am over there? I used to study in Rome, so I have done the main tourist spots. I will be traveling to Bucharest for a few days in the middle of the month. I am looking for spots that are little bit more off the beaten path... Any suggestions will help!

Lucky you, rinney.

you say that you've seen all the obvious places, but of course, what is obvious to you may not be obvious to others, and vv.

at the risk of being obvious, there is Orvieto of course, Frascati, Pompeii, or a lovely place in southern Tuscany called Orbetello where I once spent a week. It an ancient city on a lagoon on the direct train line between Rome and Genova, and is a favourite weekend resort of Romans, apparently.

I can't tell you what it's like to stay there in January, but in May it was delightful.

It would be helpful if you tell us where you've been and what you like to do.

E.g. Napoli?

Thanks for the replies! In Italy I have been to Orvieto (and loved it), Tivoli, Venice, Naples, Cinque Terre, Sorrento, Positano, Florence, Assisi and Capri. I also traveled to Barcelona, Valencia, Zurich, Paris and London, while I studied abroad. I know that going to Italy in January is a little off season, so I am looking for any place you think would be of interest during that time.

I really appreciate all the help.

I smiled when I saw your post, as I asked something very similar earlier today about a three week stay in Rome in November! When I posted my question I hadn't taken my own advice to first use the search function to see what was already posted here on Fodors. The good news is that I did get around to it after posting my question and I found some gems. Given your trip I think they'll be useful to you too.

First a post on 'Hidden Sites' in Rome
http://www.fodors.com/community/euro...sited-site.cfm

Secondly a fabulous thread started by LowCountryIslander with lots of 'Off the Beaten Path' suggestions for Rome
http://www.fodors.com/community/euro...n-november.cfm

Finally a New York Times article on house museums in Rome that someone posted a while back,
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/03/23/tr...neys.html?_r=0

We spent last January in Lisbon and it was wonderful. I'm sure it will be a good time to be in Rome too. Hope these help you as much as they did me!
