Again, what's your budget. The new Cap Rocat can be very pricey, but well worth the money (caprocat.com/new/), but not everyone is able to pay the price for such luxury.
A simple 4-star can prove disappointing on Majorca.

You want to avoid the Palma Nova and Magaluf areas. They';re filled with high rise hotels and poor food.
The areas that i would recommend are Puerto de Alcudia and Puerto de Pollenca, both have a port, beaches and restaurants. Quaint is the inland town for each of the ports. I prefer Pollenca for restaurants and for the Hotel Son Sant Jordi there. www.hotelsonsantjordi.com
The shopping in Pollenca is good too.

spend a day or just have a meal at puro beach club. very beautiful east of Palma city. The food was fine and it certainly gave us a vacation atmosphere during a long layover at Palma.
Others were also using this place as a way to spend the day before an evening flight. Airport just 10 minute max. away. Actually by car maybe 6 or so. We went on a bus.
There are buses from Palma that go here. Ask how to get to C'an Pastilla Beach. Your hotel will tell you how.

We returned yesterday after a week in S'Horta, that was our 6th visit in 3 years. We now mainly stay in the SE area as it is quieter, "realer" and the weather is better.
September can be a turning point for the weather and I would think twice about areas such as Soller, Deia etc being close to the mountains they frequently suffer worse weather. We have had 4oC and rain in Deia - driven for 45 minutes to Santanyi and been sat on the beach in 22oC.
I would definitely sepnd a night in Palma, it is one of the most overlooked cities in Europe. It has great architecture, shops, food and hotels. Do not under any circumstances miss at drink at :

In terms of hotels generally, there has been a large shift on the island away from beer/burgers towards high end low turnover tourism. At the heart of this has been the support given to many of the farms/country estates allowing them to create up market hotels in the form of those seen in Tuscany.

Most of the island isn't much more than 30 minutes away from a beach and many of the hotels on the site above offer high standards for a reasonable price. Many are also not corporate in their approach but family owned/ managed ie they care.
I would reiterate the advice from lifeman above.
Mallorca offers an incredible number of holes for whatever sort of pidgeon you are. From the very lowest burger bars to the sort of restaurants that offer a helicopter service to help you to your table. Lads from Rotherham drink 20 pints then have a kebab, 20 miles away from Claudia Schiffer's latest dinner party.
In short - do your homework as you can easily end up in the "wrong pidgeon hole".
If you do book let me know - there are heaps of things to do on the island.

Look at
http://www.monnaber.com/en/index.htm
We stayed there 3 years ago, it was lovely. Puerto Alcudia/Puerto Pollensa can be a bit cheapish - not nasty just a bit tatty. Both the inland towns are lovely (Pollensa/Alcudia) with interesting old towns/shops. The coasts were not developed in centuries gone by as they were too exposed to attack and so the "Puerto" towns are newish.
Try the Restaurant "Miramar" on the habour front in Puerto Alcudia - the fish is good.
A great day out is to take the ferry to Formentor beach - there is a beautiful stretch of sand there and a good cafe.
Also watch for the events at Alcudia Civic Centre - we saw "the" Michael Nyman play there - couldn't believe our luck, thought the adverts on walls related to a tribute band but it was him!
