Traveling to Italy for the 1st Time

My husband, mother, sister and I are traveling to Italy on 9/14 and are still trying to decide how to spend our time and where to stay.

We are flying into Naples on 9/14 and wanted to spend some time in Sorrento and along the Amalfi coast and then head up to Tuscany.

Any ideas on how long we should stay in both area and where. We are more interested in farmhouses than hotels. Something with a kitchen.

Also any other suggestions - we have to be in Geneva on 9/28 so we have plenty of time.

Is that for 2005?
It seems a bit late for this year.

benicia518,
I will top my trip report of Sorrento , Amalfi, and Montalcino for you. The places I stayed had kitchens. Click on my name if you have trouble finding the report.

I will also be traveling to Italy for the first time in November. I will be with my daughter and her boyfriend (Venetian - which will be wonderful as an interpreter!). We will be in Rome and then travel to the Amalfi Coast.

We have been looking at villas/apartments on a website http://www.summerinitaly.com which appears to be reputable (anyone out there use these people?) and the prices are not too bad. Any other suggestions from other Fodor members?

After 3 days there (4 in Rome), we will head to Venice to 'meet the family.' We will be there for another 4 days.
My daughter is strongly considering tat we rent a car in Rome and drive to the coast. I am not too terribly keen on this idea (isn't this what trains and buses are for?). From what I am hearing, the insurance is high and the roads on the coast are tricky (look more tricky than Mendicino. Anyone relate?).

Since I am new to this site, what is "topping"? Thanks!

Welcome Vivian.

(I am a newer Fodorite, only a few months. But I am enjoying the people here very much.)

I am unable to help you with the first part of your question, but topping is when your post gets sent to the start of the list of questions. It is done by Fodorites so that your message remains fresh.

If any of the more experienced Fodorites have a better explanation, go for it.

Farmhouse in Siena - try Agriturismo Marciano and ask for the dependence. You'll be amazed at how inexpensive. We stayed in May and totally loved it. It was the highlight of our vacation. Just about 4 km from the town of Siena. http://www.agriturismomarciano.it/index_en.htm The apt. has a kitchenette. Type in this name in your search and you will see another message I left earlier.
