Traveling to Dresden area

We are a party of 4 adults traveling to the Dresden area July 13 through 31. Staying with friends who live in Schwarzkollm, just north of Dresden I believe. Would appreciate any info on day trips in area, Czech Republic or Poland. Am interested in shopping for glass Christmas ornaments. Thanks for any help.

I'm staying for 20 dollars a night now in the Hotel de Saxe, Teplice, north Bohemia. Two hours by direct bus from Dresden. Delightful, and very cheap. I haven't been looking for glass, but think there's plenty around. If not, there certainly was this afternoon in Karlsbad, Karlovy Vary, a beautiful and elegant spa.

Ben Haines, of London

While Hamelin is a little further than a day trip from Dresden area, it has several wonderful shops for glass and crystal Christmas ornaments for good prices. You will enjoy Dresden, Meissen is nearby. Berlin is 2 hours north and Prague is 2 1/2 hours south. Both wonderful cities.

I found both Bautzen and Goerlitz well worth a day trip from Dresden. They are both east of D., Goerlitz being the most easterly city in Germany. In Bautzen you should not miss the infamous prison called "Bautzen II' which was where dissidents were incarcerated under the communist regime. See if you could have stuck it out in the 'tiger cages', which is where the most recalcitrant were sent. Just three weeks ago I had a guided tour from a mate of mine who had a one-bedroom apartment with full pension there for 15 months. Both towns could be visited in one day by car.

Also worth a visit is the hilly area bordering CZ called 'Saxon Switzerland'. This very picturesque area is an hour's drive south of D.

Enjoy,
Harzer
