Traveling to Croatia
I am traveling to Croatia starting May 16 for 10 days. Planning to spend 3 days in Dubrovnik and then to the islands - Korcula, Hvar. Then travel by boat to Split and get a bus to Plitvice for a day and then to Zagreb for a day or 2 where we will take a train to Budapest. THOUGHTS? Which islands are best? Should we stay on 1 island (as a base camp) and then take day trips. Any thoughts please.

sounds like a great trip. Southern Dalamatia is gorgeous. staying on an island on as a base sounds good but probably would not work out as ferry schedules are too complicated and tend not to facilitate day trips.
When you are Hvar, however, you should take a water taxi to Palmmizana or another smaller island- that's an easy day (or even half-day trip) and the vegetation is very special. From Dubrovnik you should take a water taxi for a day (or half-day) to Lokrum- it's a very unique setting.
From Korcula, i think you could take a day trip to Mljet, which is also worthwhile (for a day).
I like Hvar a lot. if you explore and go off the beaten track, it can keep you busy. Same as true for Korcula but between the two, i like Hvar better.

In May the ferry schedules are still low season - so you may find getting where you want to go in the time you have tricky.
The fast catamaran to Mljet, the Nona Ana, does not run from Korcula until the end of May. You can get it from Dubrovnik at 10am every morning, (takes you to Sobra) but it returns at 4pm each day, which doesn't give you much time to explore Mljet unless you rent a car or hire a taxi to take you around.
I've still not made it to Hvar, the ferries never seem to work in with my timetables when I've been there in May and October. There doesn't seem much point in getting to Hvar one evening and leaving the next morning before I've had a chance to see anything! One day...
But there are many other islands (Brac, Bol, Pag, etc) that will have ferries running at maybe better times - you'll need to look at the jadrolina website and see what works for you.
From Dubrovnik, definitely go to Lokrum (half-day) and Cavtat is also a nice place to visit. Walk along the coast path to Mlini - there's a nice little restaurant on the headland between the two villages, and Mlini itself is nice, quieter than Cavtat though.
