Traveling in Germany during octoberfest 2014
We are not much into the beer scene. Had hoped to get into Munich before Octoberfest, but family matters prevent us. So, is it reasonable to get around munich during Octoberfest? W e fear the weather will be too coll if we wait till its over.

It is always reasonable to avoid Munich during Oktoberfest. Hotels have outlandish rates, and are often booked solidly months in advance.
Aside from Munich proper, Oktoberfest does not impact traveling or hotel rates in the rest of Upper Bavaria. So when you want to visit Munich, you can easily do a day trip from Augsburg, Garmisch, Mittenwald or Nuremberg.

Munich has a good subway system (called the U-Bahn, so it shouldn't be hard to get around.
I would advise you to make hotel reservations early because the town will be crowded.
I'm not a big fan of Oktoberfest, being a non-drinker, but I guess it's one of those things one should do if one is in Munich. I'd enjoy it more if I knew the words to some of those songs they sing.

Munich will be great for sightseeing during Oktoberfest as long as you are staying outside the city. You can stay in one of the many villages south of Munich on the train route. I think Germany gets more beautiful the farther south you go. Oktoberfest has more than drinking tents. You can enter for free, enjoy some of the rides, vendors and food.

We ended up in the Munich area during the Fest; we stayed, and at a much more reasonable rate, in Augsburg. Easy train ride into Munich and we had no trouble at all getting around. In fact, the first time we went into Munich we had to ask somebody where all the action was taking place.
I wouldn't skip it during the celebration. I'd be prepared to pay higher hotel rates or stay in some location nearby.
