Traveling Greece without reservations
We will visit mainland Greece mid March to the end of March.Do you recommend we make reservations or can we find rooms along the way. We would for sure have reservations in Athens and some of the other spots we could reserve a night or 2 before we get there.

Tidy, you've started SO many threads, some of us are totally confused. YOur "Greece Itineary Thread" says you'rein Greece from May 7 - May 30. Now you say that it's March. Are these 2 different trips??? If so, in March you can usually find something on short notice but be aware FRiday Mar 25 is a national holiday, so lots of Greeks will be taking 3 day weekends. Otherwise, no problem. I think its always good to have a short list of places you've checked online before traveling, then use your phone during the trip.

So, to confirm, you're in mainland Greece May 15 to May 30, NOT in March?
That's early enough in the season so you won't have a problem finding vacancies. (Of course double that for March.)
But you might have a problem with the logistics of finding the TI, identifying the hotel, deciding if it's what you want, and then finding the location. At a minimum it can be time consuming.
We book ahead for 90% of our nights now. Saves time, saves money, sometimes saves a rotten night in a flea bag. It's pretty easy these days. And you can do some reading on hotel locations to put yourself close to where you want to be: specific attractions, airport, train station, etc.
We were in Greece for two weeks in October and had a wonderful time. Have a good trip.

In May the hotels will not be full and the hotel owners will be finishing a 6 month period without cash flow. If rooms are empty the chances of getting a decent deal is possible. It might be a good idea to do some research to determine the area you want to stay in and narrow down your search when you arrive.
We don't bargain and just say we want to see some other properties and start to walk out. Magically the price drops.
Make sure you confirm what is included in the price. Sometimes there might not be a fridge or the air conditioning is not included. If you want a kitchenette make sure there are kitchen utensils.
We no longer do the walk up method. I pretty much know where we want to go and if I can find something in my price range with a review rating of 8 or more I just book ahead. Already have hotels and flights booked for a month long Greek trip in September.

Mainland hotels don't really have an offseason like those on the islands. In fact, there are some places that are busier in the winter than in summer, e.g. Arachova & Delphi, near a major ski resort. I would have no hesitation showing up in May on most islands without a reservation, but would book in advance for Athens and other parts of the mainland.
