traveling alone to Ireland - need some advice

Jump to last reply

I am a 60 year old (American) female who decided to treat myself to a trip to Ireland this coming May. I have been to Ireland 4 or 5 times but have always gone to the North (Belfast, Ballycastle, Rathlin Island) and stayed with friends. This time I am going all alone and flying in to Shannon. My trip will only be about 6 days total in Ireland so I want to make the most of it. I have a rental car reserved but am leery about driving there. I had originally planned on going to Dingle but I see that it is about 3 hours from Shannon so now I am looking at other possibilities a little closer. Many years ago I spent a day or two in and near Galway, Spiddal and Clifden and wouldn't mind going there again. I just want to be near the water. I love fishing villages and hate touristy places. Also thinking maybe Kilkee, Doolin, Miltown Malbay, etc. When I look at highways on the map (i.e. N67, N68) are these 2 lane roads or motorways? I plan on staying at B&Bs and just walking around and chatting with the locals and seeing the sights. I need any advice that I can get!
