travel to prague, vienna and munich

Hi,
We will be spending 10 days in June traveling from Prague (4 days) to Vienna (3 days) to Munich (3 days). Does this seem like a good time frame for each area? I was also wondering if there is any advise as to whether we should rent a car in any of the areas, must sees in each area and if we should stay in Munich or in one of the surrounding villages. We fly into Prague, will take the train to Vienna then train to Munich. My family was hoping to tour a chocolate factory and they also want to see castles. Any other advise and things to do and see is much appreciated. Thanks!

Hi
We had five days in Munich...husband got a car
We stayed at the Mercure ...close to the old square
There was a parking station close by where we parked each night
Basically we did day trips
Once to neuschwanstein castle and surrounding area...my fav castle!
Then another dY we drove to Innsbruck ...a lovely town in Austria
We also drove the romantic road to Rothenburg which is such a pretty storybook town!
Munich ...we explored that mostly on foot
It was a good base...each night we'd have dinner around that old square and them hAve dessert and watch the street performers from an outside cafe

You could easily get to Salzburg too
We stayed four days there before we got to munich...an hour or so by train
It's well worth a day trip from Munich

Vienna
Very nice city
Make sure you go up into the hills to grinding and beyond
Easy by public transport
We stayed near ststephens in the graben...a pedestrian area in pension bosses...excellent!

The Spanish horses don't perform in Mondays last time we checked...just in case that's a must see for you

Prague is beAutiful but was dirty back in 2006
I'd stay near the old town ...nice to be in historic district
Great restaurant called sto Letiye ( 100 years I think it translates to)
Only catch registered cabs...the others will rip u off big time

Get to ceskyrumlov for a day trip
Go to main station and buy ticket...apparently cheaper on Sunday but that may have chNged
We caught the 630 am...were in ceskyrumlov by ten ish
Caught 3 pm train back
Easy
Gorgeous gorgeous town...not to be missed

I'd do three days Prague including the day trip to ceskyrumlov
And tack on another day to Munich and do the day trips
Driving in and out of Munich was easy and it's a good base to explore a bit of germany and Austria
The lakes and mountains took our breath away

We also had four days in Kraków Poland..now there's a town I could rave on about!

For trains book early for nice discounted fares - check www.seat61.com for how to do that yourself online - for general info on trains www.budgeteuropetravel.com and www.ricksteves.com.

I'd cut a day from Prague and put into Vienna or Munich -do a day trip from Munich maybe to Fussen and Neuschwanstein Castle perhaps.

"We will be spending 10 days in June traveling from Prague (4 days) to Vienna (3 days) to Munich (3 days)."

The first step is to add the travel into your plans, then prioritize what you would like to see in each destination.

So...you have 4 days in Prague. Does this count your arrival day?
Are you coming from an overseas or otherwise long flight? If so, you do not have 4 days, you have 3 and bits.

The Prague to Vienna travel means that you have 2.5 days, not 3. Vienna to Munich means you lose at least another half day, as well.

Do not rent a car; train travel between your destinations is straightforward, and you would not need the car in the cities themselves.

I wouldn't look to Vienna for a chocolate factory tour; there are several upmarket chocolate stores, but no factory tours. Vienna doesn't have any castles, either, *just* palaces.

Munich IMO but you could base in say Garmisch =an Alpine resort delight near Zugspitze and take the train into Munich in an hour.

But Munich itself has so much - better to base there and perhaps do a day trip to Dachau or Garmisch or Fussen (Neuschwanstein Castle) or any of many other nice places.

Ideal times for any location depend completely on your interests and preferences. Have you determined whether you can see and experience what YOU want in this time frame? I would find it too rushed; YMMV.

You would not need a car for any of these locations – public transportation is excellent. See rome2rio.com for your options.

“Must-sees” are also personal. If you don’t already have a good guidebook or two, I strongly encourage you to get one. In comparison to the cost of your trip, the cost of a guidebook will be nugatory, and you will have a wealth of information at your fingertips. For that matter, you can consult one at a local library or book store....

You don't need a car if you don't want one.

Cesky Krumlov can be done as a day trip from Prague by train, https://www.seat61.com/places-of-int...ky-krumlov.htm

The fairytale castle at Neuschawanstein can be done from Munich by train/bus, https://www.seat61.com/places-of-int...chwanstein.htm

Book your Prague-Vienna train from €19 in 2nd class or €29 in 1st class at Czech Railways www.cd.cz or Austrian Railways www.oebb.at

Book Vienna to Munich from €29 at either German Railways www.bahn.de/en or www.oebb.at Austrian Railways.

In both cases you print your own ticket.

Munich you can see in a day, frankly. Yet you pass through wonderful Salzburg, birthplace of Mozart, setting for the real and the Hollywood Sound of Music, without stopping?

Don't think any chocolate tours of factories at least where you are going but in Munich you can see where Willy Wonka was filmed in part:

Perfectly understandable! I must admit that I hate losing time to transit between locations, so I’d rather skip a place – even one I’m sure I would enjoy – to make sure I have the time I want for those places I do visit. Just my preference, and many people have very different perspectives. As you plan, be sure to leave enough time for moving from place to place: Not just time for the transportation itself, but also some time on either side for getting to/from your lodging, checking in/out, packing/unpacking, getting lost/oriented, etc.

Enjoy!

I've been to Munich twice and I disagree you can see it in a day. I still haven't been to the Residenz and Bavarian National Museum. The science and art museums there are good. The BMW factory tour was fascinating.

lanejohann-thanks forthe helpful tips....
fourfortravel-we are coming from the united states. We leave 6/15/18 and land at 4:45 pm in Prague. I did anticipate this will only be a travel day. probably have dinner and then bed. We will then spend 3 nights in Prague, 3 nights V. and 3 night M.
We are like to do more adventurous things. In Iceland we did snowmobiling on a glacier, highlight of the trip. But we definitely want to see castles.
KJA-I will defintely find guidebooks.
Thanks everyone!

"We will then spend 3 nights in Prague, 3 nights V. and 3 night M."

So, your itinerary looks something like this? 2 sightseeing days in Prague; 2.5 sightseeing days in Vienna; and 2 sightseeing days in Munich. Is this correct?

Day 1/Night 1 Arrive Prague
Day 2-3/Nights 2 and 3 Prague
Day 4/Night 4 Half-day travel to Vienna
Day 5-6/Nights 5-6 Vienna
Day 7/Night 7 Travel to Munich
Day 8-9/Nights 8-9 Munich
Day 10 Depart Munich?

If it's castles you want, maybe skip Vienna for Salzburg? Vienna has palaces. Many, many palaces. Salzburg has Hohensalzburg Fortress; and Bavaria has, of course, Neuschwanstein.

Outdoorsy? Hiking the Vienna vineyards is fun and all, but I might once again drop Vienna for Salzburg. Cable cars and cogwheel trains bring you into the alps, from where you can wander down into the picturesque villages of the Salzkammergut. There are several summer toboggan runs (Rodelbahn) in the area as well as in Bavaria. The ice caves in Werfen could be an adventure, too.

If adventure is what you want, the Lonely Planet might be your best bet for a guidebook, that or the Rough Guide. And listen to fourfortravel!

A couple of trip reports I wrote for...
Prague: http://fanofblank.blogspot.com/2017/...utna-hora.html
Vienna: http://fanofblank.blogspot.com/2017/...nd-vienna.html
Munich: http://fanofblank.blogspot.com/2017/...nd-berlin.html

These might help you get a sense of what you can do in one day in some of these cities. When you account for travel time between cities you lose a fair amount of time.

Enjoy trip planning!

And the indoor and outdoor beer halls - and the vast Englischer Gardens with its famous Pagoda outdoor beer garden:

Kind of like Octoberfest all summer long!

Plus the Olympic Stadium area and the Charlottenburg Palace:
