Travel to Lecce in August to visit Daughter

My 20 Yr old is going to spend the summer in Lecce to study Italian for an Ohio State Univ program. My husband and 18 yr old daughter & I are going to visit her Aug 8-16. We live in Chicago, plan to fly to Rome and then Brindisi then hire a car to take us to Lecce. The girls want to fly to Venice for the weekend (they've been once 7 yrs ago), but I'm wondering if we should just visit some towns around the coast by Brindisi and/or hire a car to drive us to Venice (9hrs) stopping along the way..... I don't know this part of Italy at all.....
My husband thinks we should go to Capri (and Amalfi coast).
Can anyone make suggestions??
Thanks!!

Your choice, of course, but you are aware that you can take a train?

It depends on your interests. I'm one of several people on this board who enjoyed spending some time in Puglia.

Brindisi to Venice is a direct flight, mid-day. It takes 1 h 25 minutes. You can fly some (a few) days in August for 117 Euros RETURN. Other days, more like 160 E.

Why wd you drive all that way in the intense heat of mid-August, when you only have 8 days total?

NOTE: the price I quoted is from the Alitalia Italian website. When I price the same flights on the Alitalia Canadian website, the price is over $700. Always book on their Italian site for flts w/in the country.

Thanks Ted and Gale for the good advice about Alitalia's Italian web site - how do you find that?

What about driving from Lecce to Positano... is that crazy??? Seems like there is no direct way to get there flying...

Since you are going to Puglia then why not enjoy Puglia.
Save the others for when you have more time. The Adriatic coast in August will be wall to wall people, as will the AC.
Stay home and enjoy Ostuni, Lecce, Alberobello, Martina Franca, Gallipoli, etc. Get your own car to explore.

I agree with Bob.

After all, the stretch from Otranto south to S.ta Maria de Leuca is called "The Little Amalfi Coast". That wd be good enough for me, given the crowds on the A. C.

Here is the Italy website for Alitalia:

http://www.alitalia.com/IT_IT/home/index.aspx

You can switch countries on this site (upper right corner) to get yr own language and currency. But you need to book on the Italy page/site to get Euro prices and local deals

Just want to say that we have returned from our trip to Lecce and the Amalfi coast and it was FABULOUS even with August heat and crowds. We were able to hire a guide and driver to take us from Lecce to Positano which was a very interesting 4 hour drive (plus one more hour for Friday late afternoon traffic). The Amalfi coast has got to be one of the most beautiful spots on earth. Yes it was very crowed but we still loved it. Ravello is one of my favorite places. Sorento - amazing.
Lecce is the other end of the spectrum..... very authentic; no english; beautiful architecture; warm and welcoming people; beautiful coast (southern Adriadic) very inexpensive relatively speaking (The dollar is so weak that everything is $$$ anywhere in Europe!)
