Hello! My husband and 4 of my friends are planning a trip to Italy for two weeks in September 2010. We are interested in renting a villa to stay at for about a week in Southern Italy- preferably Amalfi Coast region. Does anyone know of any places to stay that are near the beach, sleep 6, and aren't horribly expensive? I am thinking 5-6 nights for around $3,000US? Is this a realistic amount?
Also, in regards to renting a car- are there any in Italy that will fit all 6 of us? Or we will we need to rent 2 cars? We would like to do day trips all around Southern Italy by car.
Any input will be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

I can't recommend a rental agency or specific rental but the first place I turn when looking for rentals is www.vrbo.com. The company is a listing service that home, condo and apartment owners around the world pay to list their rentals.
You will get an idea of costs and locations by checking out the vrbo offerings. Many require a minimum number of nights, often 7 or even 14 for villas in the summer but perhaps fewer in Sept.
Be sure to read terms and conditions of rentals which often require 30-50% nonrefundable deposit in order to reserve. When you have six people you need to be sure everyone understands the cost involved if someone drops out of the plans. I would be sure to split the downpayment equally to be sure everyone is fully invested in the trip.
There are dozens that fill that bill, and you can see all of them at one site www.summerinitaly.com
Ask for their help to narrow your choices---they are most helpful and speak excellent English. Read about the various towns on the AC before you look at properties so you can your best locations. Much of that coast is vertical. We will be in Praiano next May for a week.
Re: Car (s) There are vehicles that can be rented and will accommodate 6 of you and your luggage but they are very expensive, very large and will diminish your flexibility. Check out Autoeurope for rentals and cost it out--2 smaller vehicles vs. one large. Generally, smaller vehicles are easier to park and maneuver in the likely tight roads and very tight parking ares. Two vehicles allows the group to have some private space and activity. Good luck. Paul
If you need three bedrooms (for 6 persons) I think your budget is a bit skimpy for a house rental on the AmalfiCoast in September. If you work that out, it comes to about 400 euro per night for 6 persons. You might try looking at rentals in the Cilento area; there are very good beaches and prices are lower. There are many agencies that will handle both coasts.
