Travel to Gruyeres, Switzerland
We are traveling in Switzerland in August 2011. We would like to visit Gruyeres. Can anyone tell me where it would fit best into this itinerary? And the connections we would need to make by train?
Flying into Geneva
5 nights - Wengen
1 night - Kandersteg
3 nights - Zermatt

Hi SandyMcM3,
Gruyeres lies between Geneva and Wengen, just a short detour from the Golden Pass routing of Geneva-Montreux-Gstaad-Zweisimmen-Interlaken-Wengen. If you wanted to do this, you would just change at Montbovon (between Les Avants and Chateau d'Oex).
The problem, though, is that there are no luggage lockers at Gruyeres, so you'd have to ask the folks behind the counter at the dairy shop that is next to the train station. Alternately, you can send your luggage on the train separately; it costs 20 chf for same-day service or 10 chf for two-day service.
You can get the exact train schedules at the Swiss rail site
www.rail.ch
You'd probably want to enter:
From Geneva
To Gruyeres
and then
From Gruyeres
To Wengen
The complete schedules will come up.
Have fun!

Hi again,
Yes, the baggage service on the SBB is totally reliable; I use it whenever I have a train trip that has two or more connections. Here's a site for more information:

May I ask WHY you are visiting Kanderstegg for one night?
It seems very out of the way for your itin.
I could see visiting for a few days of hiking, but one day seems odd, especially if you are going to Wengen for 5 nights.
Please explain.
I am so glad to see that the fabulous Swandav is posting again.
