I was just wondering if any one has any suggestions or tips for a 4 day stay in the Budapest area?
We will be there at the end of May. We want to spend time in Budapest and Eger as well.
We had considered renting a car to drive to Eger. Also we would also like to stay a night in Eger or some other nice town nearby... any suggestions.

I would appreciate any suggestions on any of theses things!!

We spent 5 days in Eger and Budapest last June (2013). I highly recommend Eger and staying at the Haz Senator. Great location and nice restaurant with a fun wine bar across the street. We had a great fun filled evening at the wine caves outside of Eger. The fun is interacting with the other people (locals and tourists) enjoying wine in the different caves.
Also in Budapest, I can't say enough good things about the K+K Opera Hotel. Again, a great location, terrific breakfast and a kind and informative staff. This was our second trip to Budapest so we did different things then 5 years ago. One, enjoy the baths. Second, the huge market. Third, tour and go to the Opera House.

I would say that four days is a minimum amount of time for Budapest itself, never mind adding Eger, which is two hours by train. I've visited Budapest three times, and would love to go back.

I missed the baths in a 3 day stay but did see the synagogue, the castle and the wonderful covered market (best strudel I have ever eaten was in Budapest at that market!--never mind Vienna). We also saw the musical "Elisabeth" based on the life of Franz Joseph's empress. It's in Hungarian with English surtitles, but, if you know a bit of the history, you will get it without too much reliance on the surtitles. Highly recommend it if it is playing. I also saw a Hungarian folk music performance one evening.

There is lots to do in Budapest and I would love to return some time.

When our friends visit, if they are in fantastic walking shape, we can show them the major highlights of the city in 3 very busy days. Personally, I would keep the 4th day open to either explore Budapest further or take a 1/2 day to Szentendre or Vac if you want to see a small town. Vac is similar to Eger (if you close one eye).

We know the city well which is why we can move as quickly as we do. For many, 4 days would be pushing it - just for the highlights.

It is a very large city with things to see/do in most every corner.

Don't rent a car. There is a good train service to Eger from the capital, and within Eger, buses and taxis are plentiful and fairly cheap. The centre is easily walkable.
