travel reutte to cortina
We arrive in Frankfurt and will hire a car in Wurzburg and drive to Rothenburg and stay the night. Next day we plan to drive the Romantic Road to Reutte and stay at the Hotel Moserhof for 2 nights. That takes care of our minimum 3 day car hire in Germany. We would like to see northern Italy and have had a scenic route mapped out by Steve_James previously, but my problem is how to get from Reutte to northern Italy by public transport, train or bus, so that we can then hire a car for a few more days and eventually end up in Venice to drop off car.
We are travelling in 3 weeks, and had previously planned to travel from Munich to Venice by train due to lack of time, but suddenly we have 4 extra days on our hands.

Thanks Ira, Bolzano is probably the best place to get the train to in order to hire a car, as we then want to go to Ortisei, Selva, Colfosco, Carvara, San Cassiano, Lagazuoi and then on to Cortina d'Ampezzo.
Which is the best site to look up for train schedules from Reutte/Fussen?
Any suggestions on where to stay in Cortina d'Ampezzo, or along the above route to break it up a bit.

The German Rail site http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/ is the bast to check the schedules.
Füssen needs to be written with the Umlaut over the u, or else spell it Fuessen.
There is more than one Reutte. Reutte in Tirol is the one you want.

Hi M,
If, at www.bahn.de, you click "English", the computer accepts "Fussen".
Fussen to Bolzano/Bozen is about 75E.

Looks like we will have to catch a bus, then a regional train and then the EC. How do you find out where all these connections take place?...and do you think it would be much better trip to go up to Munich and catch the EC all the way....takes just over 3 hours.

Ira, I tried "Fussen" on the English page of bahn.de and got "Fußenberg, Wenzenbach."
Glenn, on bahn.de to find out where the connections take place, click on the button "Details for All" at the bottom of the screen giving the list of connections. As to driving back to Munich to turn in your car and catch the train to Italy, you could do that. If you are in Füssen you might see whether you could turn in the car in Garmisch and do less backtracking.

We stayed at the Moserhof in Reutte last month and really enjoyed it. Nice place with a really great family running it. Ruette itself didn't seem to have a lot going on although it is in a beautiful location. The hotel has a nice restaurant with a good dinner menu. The patio is a great place to relax after a day of sightseeing, hiking, or whatever. Or if the weather is chilly, the dining room is a spacious, but cozy place.
While we were in Reutte, we took a nice drive between Reutte and Oberamergau, past the Plansee - gorgeous. If you have the time, I highly recommend it.
I don't have any advice about how to get to Cortina - I just saw that you are planning to stay at the same hotel that we did, so I thought I would chime in

Glenn - If you're wanting to overnight between Bolzano and Cortina - well, you really can't go wrong anywhere on that route
I'd suggest Ortisei or Corvara, depending on your timing.
If you're not in a hurry, I'd recommend the Suisi/Castelrotto route between Bolzano and Ortisei.
It'll add half an hour's driving - but the route is delightful with great views of the Sciliar.

I seem to have misspoke.
Thank you for the correction.
