Hi,

We are a couple and we are planning to travel to Italy from Scotland. We are planning to have a vacation of around 10-12 days that shall include Christmas and new year. Any guidance for travelling iternary and places that we could visit during our trip would be very helpful. Also one of the partner has some disability so long walking is not a preferable option.

We are planning to travel to rome on Christmas and then take a train from there to Venice and then would love to travel Sicily islands along with Florence. Please tell if hiring a car or travelling by public transport would be better. Also any recommendation on how many days would be sufficient for each location and places that we can stay at. We are looking for a decent accommodation (Nothing fancy).

I am planning to fly on 23rd of december and back on 2nd or 3rd of Jan.

Several things come to mind. Firstly, the days are short in December and January and the time for sightseeing is therefore limited. Also Northern Italy's weather at that time is likely to be very poor, further limiting sightseeing time.

10 to 12 days includes travelling time? Knock off a full day for return travel even from Glasgow or Edinburgh--to the airport-- wait for flight--flying time--from the airport--check in and unpack.

You are also suggesting four destinations in that 11 days, which now includes switching cities and hotels three times, lose another half day each time. Sicily is way too large to see properly in such a short time and too far out of the triangle of Rome , Florence and Venice to make it worthwhile.

Fly into Rome, train to Florence, train to Venice and fly home from there or vice versa and split your time between the three places. What are you interested in? Museums, galleries, exhibitions, architecture, culture? This will help you decide whether you should include Florence at all.

Bear in mind that over Christmas and New Year's Day, many public buildings will be closed, limiting your time again. However, for a chilled time, I'd stick to Venice and Rome, but it depends on what you want to see.

Agree that you should drop Sicily - you just don;t have the time. It will take a full day to get there and a full day to return and if you spend even 5 days there (not nearly enough) you have used the bulk of your time. In 12 days you can get a decent taste of the other 3 places. but do check to see which places are closed 12/25 and 1/1 with possible early closings on 12/24 and 12/31 - as well as the usual Monday closings of many museums/sights.

I wouldn;t worry about the weather - since it will have to be better than Scotland - but be aware the chilly/rainy is common with snow very rare but possible - and you need to take aqua alta into account for Venice.

If you have 12 days, you can comfortably do Venice, Florence and Rome. including Sicily won"t work - you need 10-12 days for Sicily alone. With 10 days, I would choose 2 destinations. At Christmas, I would choose Florence and Rome. It depends on your interests.
