Travel Insurance

My husband and I will be traveling to Europe in five weeks to celebrate my 50th. His father is not in good health and as we learned in April when his mother died unexpectedly that anything can happen. We are not as concerned about the cost of our hotels, car rental or rail passes as most can be cancelled in a relatively short time frame with minimal charges. However, my husband really splurged on this trip and purchased Business Class tickets. Delta will refund the $300.00 per ticket "change fee" after we produce a death certificate, however, we will be responsible for the different in the price of the return portion of the tickets and that could be several thousand dollars each to fly back in Business. Fodor's recommends Access America (but they only cover economy tickets) and Travel Guard which will cover Business Class tickets. Has anyone had any experience with travel insurance?/and or either one of these companies? Thanks

Hi dh,

Take a look at www.insuremytrip.com

You might also want evacuation insurance.

I have to say that the customer service at insuremytrip is usually very helpful.

After you look at the different policies, call them and they can answer your questions. Every emergency is a little different.

Thanks so much. After going to insuremytrip.com and comparing coverages with the different companies, I am going with Travel Guard. A little warning. When I initially started searching for coverage, I called and spoke with two reps for Access America. I told them specifically what I wanted and they supposedly directed me to the appropriate coverage. After purchasing the policy, I reread the terms and conditions and saw where it plainly stated reimbursement for "economy tickets only"....I called and spoke to another rep that night and she assured me with our "total limit coverage" we would be covered for Business Class tickets as well. Not feeling totally comfortable I emailed a request for this guarantee to be put in writing. Not hearing from anyone for a day, I again called, spoke to another rep who assured me I would be covered and was quite put out when I insisted on having it put in writing. Finally, she came back on after speaking with her supervisor and said they would be happy to put it in writing. The next morning I did receive a reply to my email and guess what.....it plainly stated "economy tickets only" would be covered. Fortunately I didn't rely on their reps for correct information and insisted on having it in writing. I cancelled my policy immediately. Thanks for the help.

We have purchased travel insurance to cover more than 20 cruises and tours, and never had to file a claim for reimbursement.
On our most recent cruise, I used Insure My Trip, and when I had to cancel for medical reasons, I filed a claim, and have had nothing but headaches as they change their story to justify denial with each letter. You should be very careful to read all the clauses, because they will be used against you if you should have reason to file a claim. I will never again use Insure My Trip, I believe they have no intention of paying a valid claim.

dd737. I didn't think a claim would be filed with insure my trip.

Wouldn't it be filed with the company you purchased the policy with?

After all. The documents come from a specific company.

Yes: policies come from whatever company you select, not insuremytrip.com, which acts as a facilitator. I filed a claim with TravelGuard after I broke my shoulder and received a refund within two weeks.
