We want to visit an exchange student from Latvia. Seems the only airport is in Riga. Anyone travel by train in Latvia? We thought we'd go for St. John's Day in June. Any advice?

Riga is the only airport to fly to. Service is by Air Baltic (Latvian Airline with up to date western aircraft- BAe), Lufthansa, SAS, British Airways and AuA.
Riga is absolutely worthwile to stay in for a few days- recommend at least three. Wonderful old town with lovely mediaeval buildings surrrounded by the "new town" with lovely (and surprisingly well restored) art- deco buildings.
Good value and great location is Hotel Konventa Seta right in the middle of old town.
Try food at restaurant Put Vejnis near the dome and Restaurant Smposium at Bergers Bazaar in new town.
No experience in train travel, but rental cars are available- beware of traffic though, comparatively reckless driving and numerous police- stops.
Latvia, however, is absolutely beautiful- try the coastline from Kolka to Riga and from Riga to the north.
Fodors
Yes: I travelled by train in the Baltic States in 1992 or so. The trains are clean and reliable, comfortable enough without being brilliantly comfortable, and they used to be a touch old-fashioned in appearance, which did no harm. The Thomas Cook European Timetable (which may be in the reference library of a city near you) shows trains from Riga to Lugazi, Rezekne, Daugavpils, Liepjha, and Ventspila. These lines tend to have two or four trains a day.
Please write if I can help further.
