Travel in December - any recommendations?
Hello there Fodors Forum! You've been quite helpful to me in the past so am hoping for some good recommendations once again.
I will be at grad school in London this fall and my boyfriend will be visiting me in December - we're hoping to go somewhere in Europe for a week or so. Only thing is he wants to go somewhere I've never been (so we can discover it together) so the following places are out: anything north of Rome in Italy, Germany, Netherlands, Belgium, France and England. We were talking of Ireland or Scotland, but will the weather be just awful then? Any thoughts on weather in Spain or Portugal, or maybe southern Italy or somewhere else I'm not thinking of? Any ideas would be much appreciated! Thanks so much!

Spain is nice, it will be cold not as cold as Germany/ Sweden/ Austria.
I would suggest Barcelona and then Granda to see Al Hambra, and Seville if you have time..
I mean, its going to be as cold as London that time of the year.. you want something warmer then you got to go to the Caribbean.
Scotland is miserable at that time of the year, yes...

Without a shadow of a doubt : Norway.
In December, you will have the experience of a lifetime. The short daylight hours offer strange and beautiful light. There should be snow around and as such you will be able to go dog-sledding/snowmobiling.
There will also be a fairly good chance of seeing the Northern Lights if the weather is clear.
We used Norwegian.com from London to Tromso. As a low cost airline, we paid next to nothing. The only downside is the cost of living in Norway is obscenely high compared to the UK/US.
In short, all the usual destinations are no more (maybe less) special in Decemeber. Norway is a very special place in winter.

Sorry, I should have been specific : how do you view awful weather?
To me : damp, wet, windy Northern Europe is awful.
The high pressure in the Artic circle gives you -5oC to 0oC but the high pressure leaves you with little dampness. Get wrapped up and it is anything but awful.
