In the interest of packing light, which guide serves you best in Italy ?

Although they are gorgeous to look at, I have to say not Eyewitness. I found them to be very heavy, and not organized in a way that is helpful for walking around, but that's just one opinion. I keep mine more as a home reference and "souvenir" with pictures.
When I went I had Frommer's Italy
and found it very useful, and because it's not so gorgeous and expensive I pulled out only the sections I needed to take with me. The Fodor's is also very good.

Mike,
No one guide is going to serve all your needs. Do consider the Michelin Green Guide as one to take with you; it's relatively lightweight and will easily fit in a hip pocket. I'd recommend you augment Michelin by visiting your library and poring over whatever guides you'll find there; assuredly it'll have the Frommer and Fodor guides at least. Find material of interest and photocopy it; take the photocopies with you rather than the guides.
d lI'd suggest you

I'd rather leave an extra pair of shoes home than travelling without a photocopy of the relevant sections of my Blue Guide(s).

Paulo
I make up my own guide by photocopying those pages in all the guides I can find concerning the areas I wish to visit. Then I put each area in a seperate binder so I only pull out the area I am in at the time.

I also cut the most interesting items out and paste them to 3x5 cards. These I can carry in my pocket for ready reference.

It my seem like alot of work but my planning is sometimes the most important part of my trip. Proper planning sure saves time and trouble later.

John
