Travel from Rome to Amsterdam, Amsterdam to Florence

I will be traveling from Rome to Amsterdam, then Amsterdam to Florence during the first week of October. I've never been over there before. Would it be better price wise to travel by train or plane? Also I was advised that it would be cheaper if I wait until I'm actually in Europe to purchase tickets for travel, any truth to that?

No truth at all to the latter either via train or plane - you could pay much much more just showing up - esp on air - check www.whichbudget.com for linking of cheap airlines serving any two cities.

If you want to go straight thru it's a long long train ride and there are no longer any overnight trains between Italy and Basel and thus Amsterdam in a direct route. Will take virtually all day and probably cost more than a cheap flight.

Ditto of course Florence to Amsterdam.

But if into trains check out these fantastic IMO train-related sites - www.seat61.com; www.budgeteuropetravel.com and www.ricksteves.com. If you paid full fare on a train then the Eurail Select Pass valid in Benelux, Germany, Switlzerland and Italy may well be cheaper than the regular full train fare if you just showed up. there are online discounts but for a journey like that involving four countries it may be cumbersome to book and still very pricey.

why can't you fly into our out of Amsterdam from home and return from or fly out of say Rome? So-called Open Jaw ticket?

Ditto what PQ is asking - why go back and forth from Italy to Amsterdam back to Italy? Rome and Florence are 90min apart by train. If this is for a 2day trip/bachelors party in the middle of your Italy vacation that's another story.

Look into flying round trip from somewhere like Pisa - don't limit your airports to Rome & Florence.

Since it's a 2d guys only trip you can pack light - and leave the bulk of your luggage in Italy. That makes it much easier (cheaper) to fly a low cost european airline like EasyJet or Ryan Air.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I guess purchasing air before hand will be the way to go then.

J62 is correct in that this is a bachelor party in the middle of an italy vacation (destination wedding).
