Travel from Montalcino to Cinque Terre

I am going to be heading out (later today!) to Italy, I have most of my travel details worked out, I am still trying to figure out how to get from Montalcino to Cinque Terre via bus or train.
I am thinking I will either need to take the train to Florence or Siena, Siena seems to be the best bet. Any alternatives or opinions on my ideas?
Thank you!

If you ticket through from Siena you can go to Empoli and change trains to La Spezia Centrale where you will change trains for your village in the CT
