Travel from Barcelona to Peniscola to Madrid

On April 30, 2012, my wife and I arrive in Barcelona. After two ot three days, we plan to go to Peniscola for a week, after which we will go to Madrid for a few days. My question is whether it is feasible to use rail transportation to go from Barcelona to Peniscola and from Peniscola to Madrid. Norman

Just looked this up - since I assumed it was a misspelling of Pensacola - but no - the spelling is correct.

Assume this is some sort of free timeshare since it appears to be at the end of hell and gone - although on the coast I would think it too cold for swimming then. Checked bahn.de and their doesn't appear to be train service. I would contact the timeshare and get specific info on public transit in the vicinity (and exactly how far away it is and how often it runs) - unless you want to rent a car.

The Spanish spelling is Peñíscola, the local Valencian spelling will be different again.

I find the above post extraordinary considering nytraveller never having been, not knowing where it is and it's renown.

Rail
Barcelona to Benicarlo-Peniscola
and
Benicarlo-Peniscola to Madrid, change at Valencia - http://www.renfe.com/

You will need to take a taxi from the Benicarlo-Peñiscola station unless they have better coordinated the bus to meet the trains.

A bit longer but you will end up IN town center instead of a few miles away would be the bus leaving from Barcleona, a quick change in Alcanar, then onto Peñiscola. 3hr. 30 minutes.

Since you have to change trains in Valencia,( from the local to the Ave terminals also.. a short distance apart connected by a bus) I suggest you spend a night there to enjoy the city. Or again take a bus from Peñiscola to Madrid, but it will be quite a long ride and I do not suggest it for that length of a trip when there are such easy train connections. You have the AVE from Valencia to Madrid several times a day in 1 hr. 38 minutes.

If you are thinking at the Spanish train, it may a good idea. The only thing what I don't linke is that is not giving you any option to stop wherever you want, like in car. Personally would prefer to hire a car in a place la www.europcar.com, www.victoriacars.com or maybe www.herz.com and take your time. There are many to be seen and you should stop as well to Tarragona. lovely city.

If you want by train you can find in http://www.renfe.com/EN/viajeros/index.html (this is the english version) all the connections. You can go to Peñíscola with the Alavia or a Euromed and continue to Valencia City.
In Valencia, if you want to try something different just next to the Estación del Norte (Valencia North Train Station) you can find the high speed station Joaquín Sorolla. This train is called AVE (bird in english) and you make 1hour and 38 minutes to Madrid (394km) and the speed is between 280 and 303km/hour. Is great and the price is not very different than a normal train. In offer is 50 euros per person, but book online and in advance and normal price is 80 euros per person.

Good luck.
