Travel from Amalfi coast to Pienza

My wife and I will be traveling from the AC to a small town near Pienza during the second week of September. The current debate for this trip is how to get from Priano to Pienza. Would it be better to rent a car in Sorrento or Naples and drive or take train to Perugia then rent a car and continue the trip? We will spend 7 nights in the Pienza area followed by 3 nights in Florence, where I would return car upon arrival, then take train to Rome for return to US. Any advice?
Thank you.

No, Pienza is nowhere close to Perugia. Since you would have to go to either Sorrento or Naples to get a car (you really don't want to pick up a car in Naples or drive in Naples), you may as well just take the train to Chiusi and pick up a car there.

Options:
Bus from Praiano to Sorrento, pick up car
Bus from Praiano to Salerno, pick up car

or

Bus to either Salerno or Sorrento and train to Chiusi, pick up car.

Return the car at Florence airport (you aren't allowed to drive in Florence).

A couple of options you didn't mention:

You could go from Praiano to Salerno and rent the car there. I think you'd by-pass most of the Naples traffic that way.

If you'd rather not drive so many hours (probably at least 5 without any stops), I think Orvieto and Chiusi are better options than Perugia for the rental pick-up. Chiusi is the closest to Pienza and small enough to make driving away a snap. Orvieto is next closest, would be worth a short visit if you had time and also has easy egress. The rental offices in Chiusi and Orvieto are both very near the train stations, but both are closed for a couple of hours in the middle of the day so you'd have to time your arrival accordingly. Or have lunch! Perugia is the farthest and biggest.

Thank you for the info. For Jean could kybourbon be your lost twin? Based on the above, I think we will take the train to either Orvieto or Chiusi. Probably Chiusi because it seems to me by the time we get from Praiano to Salerno/Naples for the train and then train trip to Chiusi half the day will be gone. I definitely do not want to feel rushed on this vacation. I really want to take the time to visit Orvieto and not rush through with a just a quick look and lunch.

One other option:

bus/taxi to Positano, ferry to Salerno, train to Chiusi.

The Etruscan museum in Chiusi is worth a quick visit also.

I would get a driver to Sorrento and rent a car there---why mess with multiple modes of transport--just drive it on your schedule.
