Travel Europe

Hey my name is Karl, I am planning on back packing Europe in fall 2017 I am hoping to back pack for 2 months and then stay with my relatives in Norway for 4-6 months, I plan on working in Norway but I am asking your opinions on where I should visit in Europe, it we'll be my first time ever really travelling so I would like ideas, stuff I would like to see would be history/war museums as that is something that I think I would enjoy. Also would like opinions on how much money I should save to have a comfortable but not crazy expensive trip, I am planning on couch surfing or staying in hostels
Thanks Karl

What's your nationality? If you're American you will need a residence permit for Norway, and probably some kind of work permit.

See lonelyplanet.com for suggested budgets. See your library or local bookshop for guidebooks that will help you figure out where you want to go. There are history museums everywhere. London has a major war museum, but there are plenty of them too.

I've had very good luck with http://www.hospitalityclub.org. Similar to Couchsurfing, I've stayed with some great people in Europe & Asia. The site is run by volunteers so it can sometimes be slow to get signed up. Do it now if it interests you and you'll be able to find hosts where you plan to go and have plenty of time to make contact.

Time to invest into some paperguides or do some serious research. I hope you don't expect us to devise an itinerary, as we are almost all of us way past backpacking...

Would someone please defing "backpacking" for me. Nobody ever says "I'm going suitcasing" or "I'm going Ryanair-acceptable-carry-on-bag-sizing".

Next trip, I'm Samsoniting, last trip we went Globeiting.

I agree with the suggestions guidebooks are in order (Lonely Planet, Rough Guides, Let's Go) at this early state of trip planning.

Or Lonely Planet's forum like this one called The Thorn Tree has many more backpackers posting than here.

That said, once you figure out where you're going, we can help nail down an itinerary that will work.

Karl, your questions are way to general to receive reasonable answers.

>> it we'll be my first time ever really travelling <<

If this is true, I strongly suggest starting with reading guidebooks. And trip reports of people who have travelled the way you intend to do.

And clear the legal questions involved - visa requirements, work permit etc.

After you have done your research, you may come back asking us specific questions.

Karl, do you eat meat, do you drink alcohol? Both these have a big affect on overall costs.

If couch surfing you know the costs of that, so all that is left is

food & drink (see above)
Local travel
Long distance travel
Entry fees

I eat little meat but a lot of alcohol and I don't visit crazy countries like Norway or Switzerland where the bills just go crazy.

I budget E7 for breakfast, E13 for lunch and E20 for supper.
Museums, one a day at E10
Local transport E10
Long distance E100

Hope that helps

The largest collection of stuff on the war sits in a triangle that includes Normandy, Dunkerque and Mulhouse. Yes there is loads of other stuff, but here every field seems to have bit of steel.
