Best to go to the Lonely Planet Thorn Tree forum where there are younger members/backpackers. Also stay in hostels as you'll find other people traveling solo to hook up with.

I ditto the idea of meeting other young people in hostels.

hook up with

Would recommend NOT using that term - has a very different meaning associated with it.

What the heck does it mean? Has the meaning changed from "connect with" to something else?

I suppose there are lots of English words that have multiple meanings and can be related to sex in some form. I guess I'll now have to refer to "connecting my bra" rather than hooking, even though there are hooks involved.

I am trying not to speak (write) in cliches so that's where I give myself a demerit.

Webster's dictionary gives the sexual definition as the 4th entry. It's funny in that if I hadn't put a space between "hook" and "up" it would have a completely different meaning.

My intent was to advise that one may meet and travel with, or have dinner with, others when staying in hostels.

I know, adrienne. It seems that the newer definitions are used by the younger generations. And since OP is young...didn't want to set her ? astray, lest they get more than they bargained for!

It's tough trying to keep up with new words/meanings.
