Travel by car from Venice to Croatia

we are two couples travelling from Sydney to Venice and wanting to visit Croatia. we are planning to drive to National park and also the coastal towns and believe need to visit the Split. Can anyone tell me roughly how many hours we might need to allocate and any advice in terms of car hire, accommodation is welcome. we have to go back to Venice again to continue with our travels. we thought 4 days but not sure if this is enough for a taste of Croatia.

With that amount of time I would spend some time in Istria, not Split, not Plitvice Lakes (I assume that is the park you are talking about.) It will take a half a day to pick up a car and get to Istria and the same to get back to Venice. It would for sure be a taste. Four days really is not enough to get down to Split. Google Rovinj, Pula, Porec and Istria in general to get an idea of what you can see. Also Opatija could work.

I think rialtogrl has given you some excellent information (as she always does).

I'd go a bit further...

IMO, you really canNOT get a "taste" of Croatia in 4 days -- it is a vast country that still shows an incredible array of different cultural and historic influences. Some examples: Istria was part of Italy until after WWII, and so clearly shows its Italian influence. Zagreb and the area to the NE (and a few other areas) were part of the Austrio-Hungarian empire, and show it's influence. Dubrovnik, and the southernmost parts of Croatia, still bear distinct traces of their Ottoman history. And in the middle, Split and around, you have evidence of the Roman Empire (Split's Diocetian Palace being the prime example), but also Greek and Venezian and so MANY more influences -- not to mention local ones!

With just 4 days (I spent 3 weeks in Croatia, and had to make some VERY difficult decisions about what to skip) and coming from Venice, I think you have a few choices worth consideration:

- A route that includes the Plitvice Lakes National Park. This park is, IMO, the single most un-missable of Croatia's many splendors. Not only are the lakes connected by travertine waterfall formations, each lake has unique microbiota, and as a result, the lakes are different colors. The best way to see that is to make a single, long loop through the park -- something on the order of 6 hours or more (including time for the boat that connects the lower and upper lakes), and by all means, start at the lowest part of the park so you are facing the falls as you proceed. You could get there by going through Istria or Zagreb; your call.

- Istria. Visit Rovinj, Porec, some hill towns....

- Zagreb, perhaps with Varazdin.

- Note that Split is my favorite city in Croatia, but I wouldn't put it ahead of the Plitvice Lakes, and with the time you have, I think it would make sense to forego Split on this trip, and instead combine the Plitvice Lakes and Istria. JMO.

- OR skip Croatia: Visit Slovenia instead. 4 days is, IMO, well suited to a visit to charming Ljubljana and Lake Bled.

I strongly recommend that you consult the Rough Guide to Croatia.

Good luck!

Good luck!

Thank you both for wonderful advice. I had a feeling 4 days is not even close to be enough but we have no choice in the time allocation. I can't wait to see all these wonderful places.
thanks again.
