Hello all...I am planning a trip for next year and would like to go to Rome, then on to Calabria and then to Taormina, Sicily. Was wondering if anyone had any advice on whether it makes sense to head back to Rome before flying home to New York or if there are any direct flights from Sicily to NY. I don't necessarily have to do the trip in that order either and I wouldn't be opposed to going back to Rome, if that makes the most sense. Rome is not such a bad place to have to visit twice in one trip!

While I agree Rome isn't a bad place to go twice in one trip, it is a good distance from Taormina just to get on a plane. I beleive there are direct flights to NY from Sicily on Eurofly. But they may only be from Palermo. I like saving Rome for the end of my trips so I can shop and not have to carry it around with me. Why not fly JFK to Palermo direct, see Palermo for a day or two (it's a great city) then pick up a car and head to Taormina. Go to Calabria and then Rome, dropping the car off before checking into your hotel.

Thank you...that sounds like good advice. I will look into that. I assume from Sicily to Calabria we can go by ferry with a car?

Fly from Catania or Palermo via Rome--there are many flights daily.

Yes, drive from Taormina to Messina and follow the signs for the car ferry to Villa San Giovanni on the mainland. It's very easy. It costs around 20 Euro for a small car to get on the ferry and they leave every 30 minutes or so. The ferry ride takes about 25 minutes to cross.

We have been traveling for 35 years and Sicily quickly moved up to one of our favorite places after one visit.

There are airports in both Catania and Palermo. We flew to Rome and then to JFK. We had a long layover in Rome so we took a cab into the city had lunch and returned.

Thank you all...has anyone had any experience flying Eurofly as suggested above? It sounds great in terms of not having to connect back from Sicily, but I am really not very familiar wth them.
