Transpotation within Croatia

We're in the beginning stages of planning out trip and would like to find out if it's easy enough to to the coastal Dalmation areas without a car. This would be the end of Sept. The reason that Korcula is in the itinerary is because it seems difficult to get from Hvar to Dubrovnik - is this true?
Our loose itinerary at this time is something like;
Paris - Split - possibly Togir - I'm assuming that one would have to transport back to Split to get to Hvar. At this time Split doesn't seem to have much appeal.
Hvar
Korcula - perhaps if it seems different enough from Hvar
Dubrovnik - Paris

Does this sound like a logical route in regards to transportation? Also, would love to hear how you like or don't like each area that I've mentioned. Neighborhood (walking or close to transport) recommendations would also be appreciated. We're hoping to rent apartments but will do hotels/BBs if we can't find short term apartments.

I found Split interesting, don't just write it off. For transport see http://www.jadrolinija.hr/default.aspx?lang=2

Where else can you find a town inside a Roman palace?

I also enjoyed some excellent wine in a small bistro, but that's not specific to Split.

The ferry link doesn't offer up too much info.

A walled city or a palace?

The ferry link has schedules, what else do you want?

A palace. It was a very big palace. See, e.g., http://westernbalkans.net/index.php/...iocletian-city

We had a car when in Croatia so can't comment on the public transportation. We flew from Paris to Zagreb, then to Dubrovnik. After a few days there, we picked up a car and drove to Trogir. We visited Split from Trogir then took the car ferry to Hvar and back. I am certain that I read about bus transportation between Split and Dubrovnik so if you wanted to bypass Korcula you could do so. We preferred Hvar to Korcula.

In Dubrovnik we stayed at Villa Adriatica and would stay there again if we return. The room was fine and the terrace was spectacular. In Hvar we stayed at the Hvar Park Hotel and really enjoyed it.

Judy,
Thanks for the good info.

thurdsday,
Perhaps the link that you posted is great. Problem is that it's not giving me schedules or pricing when I try to clink on the links. Thanks

How many minutes is the walk to Old Town from the Villa Adriatica?

If you're using the "search schedules" links they don't go past the end of May, but the timetables including the summer are available from the "timetable" link. For prices you want "local lines". Those work for me.

cybor, maybe two minutes, if that. It is just outside the gate (cannot remember whether Pile or Ploce gate) but the terrace overlooks the harbor. The location and views were wonderful, especially considering the price.

You can do it all easily by public transportation. We spent 2 weeks there, in the off season, and had absolutely no problems getting around.

From Hvar, you can take a ferry to Korcula, then a bus or ferry to Dubrovnik. I'm not sure of the schedules, but I would think Hvar > Dubrovnik is pretty straightforward.

We really enjoyed Korcula, stayed at Apartments Lenni. It's a tiny little town, but just gorgeous.

Don't write off Split, it gets a bad rap (especially on the travel boards)and is quite underrated, we thought. We stayed there 2 nights and were quite surprised that we ended up absolutely loving it. (We stayed at the Villa Split Art, just outside the walls). Split had energy, a great vibe, lots of cafes, restaurants and nooks and crannies hidden within the narrow streets inside the palace. Don't miss the inside of Jupiter's Temple and a hike up to the top of Marjan Hill for the great views.

If you have time, try to take a detour into Bosnia -- Sarajevo was the highlight of our trip.

Oh, forgot to say, we were very glad we didn't stay in Trogir instead of Split. It was a lovely little place, but highly touristy and a bit sleepy while we were there. There's some excellent architecture there, though. After a few hours we were ready to go back to Split.

I agree with thursdaysd and NanBug about Split - I thought it fascinating, both because of its unique history and because of its current energy. But not everyone likes it. Trogir is just a short bus ride away and is VERY different. I enjoyed it, too, mostly for its amazing medieval stonework. As NanBug says, its touristy and sleepy - and lovely.

I thought Korcula and Hvar Town sufficiently different to justify visiting both. Hvar struck me as very upscale; Korcula not so much. Both are highly touristed in season. If you Korcula, see if you can visit on a night when the moreska is performed.

And yes, you should be able to visit all of these places without a car.

Enjoy!

Ok, I'll ignore the books and take a second look at Split. I like the idea of going to a place that has good energy. Also like the idea of splitting things into some R&R and some places that have energy.

As it seems that gas prices are going up in the US, I just booked my flights. the fares actually went up 60. in one day. I grabbed our flights for 869. RT

Sept 20 Boston - Paris with a return on Oct. 4. We'll be in Croatia Sept. 21 - 30th. We'll fly into Split and out of Dubrovnik and then spend the remaining time in Paris. It was the cheapest way to fly to Croatia.
Anyhow, now I have to figure out my itinerary.
Has anyone here ridden bicycles in Croatia - are they easy enough to rent?
Would also love to hear about any semi close by places that I'm over looking. Don't think we want to be on buses all day.

I have rented bicycles in Korcula. Note most places you will be are extremely hilly. Most towns have facilities for renting bikes, scooters, and cars.
Are you flying in and out of Split?

You have plenty of time for Split/Trogir, Hvar, Korcula, and Dubrovnik. I think those four stops would be a perfect first trip.
The number of days spent in Split/Trogir will be determined by if you wish to explore the mainland any or make the trek to Plitvice National Park (about 3-4 hours from Split). The number of days spent in Dubrovnik should be determined by if you wish to do day trips to Kotor or Mostar. Dubrovnik itself is quite small and I think 2 days are plenty otherwise, but I prefer spending time on the islands just wandering around. The days allocated for Hvar/Korcula will be dictated by the ferry schedule, but note you can arrive on Hvar at Stari Grad and Korcula at Vela Luka. Hope that helps, and have fun planning!
