Transportation help Dublin-Salzburg-Paris
We are arriving in Dublin 11/14 for a conference and have chosen to extend our stay and depart the following Saturday 11/22 from Paris. Our first thoughts were to spend time in Normandy but my daughter really wants to do the Sound of Music tour in Salzburg. We will be relying on flights and trains but am having a hard time finding agreeable schedules. The flights I've seen from Dublin to Salzburg include 10+ hour layovers and I was thinking we could take an overnight train from Salzburg to Paris, save time and money, but realize this is not a possibility and any nearby trains are pricey ($300 pp) and take an entire day. Any thoughts, suggestions or information to streamline our getting from Point A to B to C without breaking the bank, would be very much appreciated!!

On 21/11 I'm seeing prices from Salzburg to Paris by high-speed daytime trains from 99 euros ($124) at www.bahn.de/en (German Railways - if you are seeing prices in US$ you are in the wrong place!).
That's a busy Friday, if you went on 20/11 I'm seeing fares from 79 euros ($99)
The night train is indeed coming out as expensive that night.

Your entire trip is 8days, including the arrival day and the conference as you depart on 11/22. How many days/nights are you planning on for Paris? A trip to Salzburg may require at least 1 or two nights in Salzburg given the flight times, and the time of a tour. The Sound of Music tours generally run about 4 hours, and in November they may not run more than once a day.
As for transportation, look at Lufthansa flights Dublin
Salzburg and then Salzburg to Paris. They are not non-stop and will probably cost at least $300 pp.

When is the conference? When can you actually depart Dublin? You are departing Paris on the 22nd, so unless you are departing late that night, that day doesn't count. How many in your group? How much is the Sound of Music Tour worth to you in money and travel time. Seems like a good bit of money and a lot of vacation time spent for a four hour tour. Would it be better to save it for a trip that included more of Austria?
Depending on how much time you actually have, Paris might be enough.
Have you been to London? If not, it would work well with Paris and you could take your daughter to some shows - not the same, but with all there is in London, there should be something of interest. There are lots of short flights from Dublin to London and then an easy trip to Paris. This would certainly give you a lot more sight seeing time.

Salzburg is very small so I'm not surprised you aren't finding bargains there. If Ryanair doesn't go there, I imagine any flight will be high.
I just took the train from Vienna to Salzburg, it wasn't far, and then the train from Salzburg to Paris. But with your short time frame, not sure that is worth it.
I really like Easyjet and it turns out they do fly nonstop from Liverpool to Salzburg, beginning dec 13th, but only on Saturdays. The fare is very reasonable, as usual for them (around 100 GBP or 125 euro). Liverpool isn't that far from Dublin, although across water, maybe that is a possibility. There is a ferry, but Ryanair also flies between the two. Now that is again making for a long trip. I've never flown Ryanair but from what I've heard, I would just rather fly them a short distance and then Easyjet to Salzburg. I've flown them several times and really like them. If Ryanair flew direct from Dublin to Salzburg, I"d take them of course, but it appears they do not. And they don't fly Liverpool to Salzburg, either. I imagine Liverpool only has one small airport though, might not be too bad if you really want to do this.
It is feasible since the Dublin to Liverpool Ryanair flight is at 7:50 am-8:15 and the Easyjet flight Liverpool to Salzburg is at 11:20am-2:30 pm. Ryanair is real cheap as a base fare, but some addons for baggage, etc, but that would still be a reasonable cost overall, I'd say. And you'd get into Salzburg by mid-afternoon.

Ryan air does not cut you any slack if you run late, so you would have to get up pretty early and get to the airport in Dublin for the 7:50 flight. You then have a 3 hour lay over in Liverpool. Even if you get to Salzburg by 2:30, you have to get to your hotel.
The last tour for Sound of Music starts at 2:00, so you could not do it the day of arrival. You could do the morning tour the next day and finish early afternoon - tour is four hours. You could get a flight to Paris or train that night.
We still do not know how long your conference is, and when you can depart Dublin. Knowing that will bring better suggestions.
