Transportation Chiusi to Montalcino

I'll be traveling from Rome to Chiusi by train (direct - intercity) and am looking for the best way to Montalcino from there. I'm not having much luck with bus schedules or finding information on Chiusi. A route option is from Rome to Grossetto (sp?) to Buonconvento but it will take longer since both are regional trains and I'll also have to schlep my luggage on and off two trains instead of one.

Second question: I plan (hope) to travel light and would appreciate suggestions on what clothing I'll need for mid October. Sweater? Jacket? Lined raincoat?

Thank you.

Chiusi was one of my favorite places in Italy as it was the first place we stayed on our three-week trip to celebrate a big wedding anniversary. There is a "new" part (where the train station is) and an "old" historic "Centro" part -- where the Etruscan museum is and several wonderful inexpensive restaurants.

Frankly, the best way to get to Montalcino is by car -- and driving in Umbria/Tuscany is very very easy. Not only can you travel light, but you will be on your OWN time-table.

Hi L,

A lined raincoat is the best way to travel.

The weather will be chilly, rainy, windy, warm, humid, clear, sunny, hot, cold....

Thanks Ira. I love it! I had a feeling that's what the weather would be. I guess I'll have to pull out my trusty black raincoat with the removable lining. A warm sweater sounds like a must as well.

Thanks also to uhoh busted for the helpful info on Chiusi. I should have written in my original post that I don't want to rent a car because I'll be on my own in Montalcino for a few days and will then meet a group in Florence and will be traveling with them for ten days or so.

Thank you both.

There is a bus from Chiusi to Montalcino. We decided against doing this because of the time involved. Good luck and enjoy!

Ooooh, also forgot to add...check to see but I don't think there is luggage storage. We got bogged down with this problem in Orvieto. Luckily found a hotel to pay to watch out bags.

Thanks for the suggestion. Do you happen to know the bus web site? I've not been able to find a bus schedule for the Chiusi region. I've looked at many sites that serve other areas of Tuscany but am stumped on this one.

Thanks again.

Actually there is no direct transport from Chiusi to Montalcino. The local promotion agency said that your options are to go Rome Grosseto then Buonconvento where you can catch a bus to Montalcino or go Rome Florence Siena and then a bus into Montalcino (trainspa.it).

I understand that you are meeting people later on - however the drop off charges for the major cities is not the bad - www.sixt.com has a 30.-Euro drop off Rome to Florence. You might find between the tickets and the time lost changing buses, trains etc. you are much better picking up a car and driving it then leaving the car somewhere along the line. Or you could go to Florence pick the car up there and enjoy the ride down to Montalcino and then drive it back to Florence and drop it off (avoiding any extra fees.)

Living in Tuscany and loving it!
