I am planning a walking holiday beginning in the little hilltop town of Pitigliano 100 km north-northwest of Rome and west of Lake Bolseno.
How can I get there from Rome? Train? Bus? Suggestions?

Trip Ideas
I found a web site that mentions:
"There are no direct trains to Pitigliano. If you are coming by train or bus, you will first have to get to the Albinia station. From here you will have to take a bus to reach Pitigliano. The company that runs buses between Albinia and Pitigliano is called RAMA. For tickets contact 0564 25215."
Here's the site:
http://www.traveltuscany.net/tourism-in-tuscany/places/pitigliano.html
Here are the schedules:
1. Rome to Albinia:
www.ferroviedellostato.it
2. Albinia to Pitigliano:
www.griforama.it
http://www.ramamobilita.it/~linee_orari/orari/pdf/Q_41AA.pdf
The connection times at Albinia are unfortunately not the best. There is, however, one very good connection at Orbetello train station (Orbetello F.S.), a few kilometers south of Albinia:
Depart Rome 7:58 ES-City train
Arrive Orbetello F.S. 9:18
Depart Orbetello F.S. 9:58 RAMA bus
Arrive Pitigliano 11:20
You pay for this good connection insofar as the ES-City train is twice the cost of the "regionale" train between Rome and Albinia. The ES-City train is much faster, and generally much nicer, than the unreserved "regionale". This connecting service is daily. Seats on the ES-City train are all reserved. The RAMA bus is likely to be perfectly on time, because it originates close by in Orbetello Town, and terminates in Pitigliano.
If you need to connect between Florence and Pitigliano, the best connection is at Grosseto train station, using RAMA buses on both legs:
Between Pitigliano and Grosseto train station:
http://www.ramamobilita.it/~linee_orari/orari/pdf/Q_41.pdf
Between Grosseto train station and Florence train station:
http://www.ramamobilita.it/~linee_orari/orari/pdf/Q_41.pdf
Because the buses have reclining seats, the trip is quite comfortable. Be careful about the Sunday schedules.
