This is probably a simple question, but I need advice getting from Roma Termini to FCO. There will be 3 of us splitting a ride, so we would rather take taxi/shuttle over schlepping luggage on the express train.

1) Will there be much of a price difference between taxi and reserved car service?

2) I have never reserved car service upon arriving after a train (only planes). Will they wait as they do at airports and monitor train delays?

Really if already going by train to Termini and then going to FCO you can easily just change trains and get to the airport for chump change compared to taxis or reserved shuttles - you will do more walking to get from the train to the taxis or car service out front and Termini is kind of hectic at times - if it were reverse, coming in from FCO it would make sense but if already at Termini IMO you will do more schlepping with luggage to get to the taxi/car than by just changing tracks and boarding the dedicated airport train with lots of luggage for bags.

re-think that plan IMO.

3 x fares on the Leonardo Express is 42 euro and a cab from within the walls is 48 euro - so taxi wins.

In terms of a car service, I've used Rome Cabs many times. They charge 50 euro to the airport

so to answer the question about car services waiting for late trains and where do they them - how far must they walk to the cab vs the Leonardo Express? Personally can't see anything easier than switching tracks and going right to the airport terminals by train - do you tip cabbies - 48 euros does seem reasonable though.

In Rome, the private car services and taxis pretty much charge the same price. I've used www.romeshuttlelimousine.com but I've also heard good things about Rome Cabs. You could ask both services what they would charge and also whether they would wait for late trains.

I myself would take the train if I were already at the tracks. It also doesn't have the risk of getting caught in traffic.

Ok thank you for the feedback. My primary experience with trains have been subways in NYC and Paris where they are packed to the gills and I'm usually left standing. That seems like a pain with luggage. Is this express train to the airport different?

It is more like a commuter train and has a luggage storage area. I agree that it will take more effort to find your way through the station to the pickup lication for a private car than to walk to the track (I think 24) for the Leonardo Express and take the next train--they depart every 30 minutes.

Leonardo express is a "1st class" only express train to the airport. It is nothing like what you would assume by looking at big city subways.

You can easily find out how it looks like inside by googling around. The train would not get any more crowded once it leaves the station.

I think "1st class" gives the wrong impression. It can get pretty crowded. I suggest you walk down the track to the first car, which is never as crowded as the car at the head of track 24. That will also be the first car when you get to the airport.
