San Gimignano doesn't appear to be listed on the Trenitalia website. Anybody with further info on the area?

No, Besides private cars, I think that there is "some" access by bus.

From http://www.alysonadventures.com/gay/hike/walking.htm#Florence-bus-SanG

How do I get from Florence to San Gimignano by bus?

It's not hard. The step-by-step guidelines below are accurate as of this writing, but things can change, so watch and ask as you go.

1) Go to the SITA-Train bus station, across the road from the Santa Maria Novella. (That's Florence's main train station. Walk straight out from the tracks at the train station to the covered outdoor driveway. Turn right go down steps, and cross the street. Turn left, then very soon right at the corner, and the SITA station is the second building.) Buy a ticket, from either a ticket machine or human operator, to San Gimignano. It will cost about 5 euros.

2) Get on a "Diretta" bus to Siena (not the "Rapida", which goes non-stop to Siena). There should be one every hour or less.

3) Get off the bus at the second stop in Poggibonsi, in front of the train ticket office. This will take about 40 or 50 minutes.

4) We generally offer a Poggibonsi pickup the afternoon the trip starts. Our pre-trip newsletter gives details. If you want to continue on to San Gimignano on your own, wait (it should be under 30 minutes) for the "Train" city bus (yes, that's right, it's a bus that's called Train). The trip to San Gimignano takes about 25 minutes.

5) Some buses make two stops in San Gimignano: First at Porta San Giovanni (at the south end of the city), then a second stop at Porta San Matteo, at the north end. Our pre-trip newsletter will tell you where we're staying in San Gimignano for this trip, and which stop is most convenient.

Best wishes,

Rex
The closest station is Poggibonsi. From there I'd suspect you can take a cab but it's probably $$$. Alternatively, if you are day tripping from Florence or Siena, your best best is the bus.

David/Clare

If you wish to take the train, you get on one bound for Pisa but get off at a stop called "Empoli" about 30 mins outside of Florence. Then you change there for a train to Poggibonsi - takes about 30 mins, but the wait between changes adds to the trip time. From Poggibonsi you can take a bus or a cab to San G, about 10 mins away.

Enter "Poggibonsi" in as your destination on Trenitalia and you should get further info.

You can catch a train to Poggibonsi then a bus from outside the train station to San Gimignano, bus takes about 15 mins.
Note there are generally no vehicles allowed within the walls of San Gimignano, we saw the occasional local vehicle delivering goods etc.
If you are staying overnight (it's lovely and quiet with few tourists at night, lots of atmosphere) we can recommend the B&B at www.sangiroom.com
Kay
