Train/car from Madrid to Toledo tomorrow
I am arriving at the Atocha station in Madrid tomorrow and am then going to Toledo. I can't seem to make round trip reservations online at this point- I tried through Renfe. Is it likely I can purchase a ticket when I arrive there (on Saturday)?
If not is it difficult to rent a car at the station or is it better to go to the airport to do so?
Thanks!

there are plenty of Toledo trains and unlikely to be full - first class especially - anyway don't drive as cars are useless once in Toledo. Trains leave Atocha station hourly at :20 after hour tomorrow - take just 33 minutes. Just go to station and put angst to rest IMO.
Where are you driving to? Just Toledo- if heading out of town then maybe drive to Toledo and go on from there.
Madrid-Charmartin train station is on the outskirts of Madrid - easy enough to drive as from airport - Atocha is mired in town center.

There are plenty of trains and buses daily. The RENFE site is a PITA and you will have to pay extra at Atocha. And be sure to be at the rail stations early as you must go through security. They have the high speed AVE and a regular local train.
But if you have time at ATocha be sure to look at the palm trees and the turtle pool.

more trains?
Anyway. when you arrive at barajas buy your ticket there. At Atocha, try to buy it from a machine kiosk.. or they SHOULD have a line for immediate departure.
At some stations you need to get a number from a machine to later be called to a window

the AVE is losing so much money, I doubt they can risk not filling/ selling sufficient tickets after rush hour to put more frequency/ more cars than they have already designated for that time frame. The hour wait was probably for the train to go to Toledo and come back. It is not set up as a commuter train.. so..until dozens of people need that extra train, I don't think it's going to happen. Plus, tour groups are irregular in size, but if one has bought that exact time, you may be stuck with no ticket today, but tomorrow no problem.
