Train Travel Reservations in Italy

Sorry if this is a repeat. I searched for it but really didn't get an answer.

We will be travelling from Calalzo to Florence by train. On the Trenitalia website, it shows part of the trip as Eurail...which needs a reservation.

How far in advance do we need to get these reservations? We hesitate to do it now ...pre-trip....since we are not sure which train we will be able to catch when we hike out of the mountains.

Any advise would be great!

Thanks

Hi Julie,

The ES* train is the Italian High Speed service. It is not Eurail.

All seats are reserved on these trains. The reservation is included in the ticket price.

I suggest that you buy your tickets when you come down out of the mountains. The ticket agent in Calalzo will put ou on the next available trains, including the ES*.

Make sure that you take the train to Florence SMN, not Campo di Marte.

Thanks ira for the information. One more question? I read that we must purchase supplements for the high speed train? Will we pay that when we get our tickets in Calalzo? Or will we have to do something special when we get to that leg of the trip?

Thanks for your patience.

Sounds like you have a pass? I paid the supplements at the station when I did my seat reservations if was a Eurostar.

To find your previous posts click on your own screen name.

Have you already purchased a train pass? Looking at your other posts it seems that you aren't traveling enough to need a pass.

As Ira pointed out ES trains aren't Eurail. Eurail is a company that sells train passes. There aren't any Eurail trains. You only need to purchase seat reservations on ES trains if you are using a railpass. The ES trains prices on Trenitalia include your seat and there is no supplement charged.

Hi JK,

>I read that we must purchase supplements for the high speed train?

As noted, only if you have a railpass.
whether you do or not, go to www.railsaver.com, enter your total itinerary for two people and click "only if it saves me money". You can get a refund on your railpasses if you already have one.

>Will we pay that when we get our tickets in Calalzo? <

Yes. You buy your ticket all the way to Florence and everything is included.

Thanks for the help everyone. I mispoke myself with the ES/Eurail thing. No, we did not plan on buying a pass. Thanks for explaining the supplement thing also.
