I guess it depends what sort of comforts you're used to. I caught an overnight train from St Petersburg to Moscow in 2004 and the shared cabins were fine but the state of the washrooms left quite a lot to be desired! Having said that, this is probably more of an issue if you are having to do pre-bed things like washing your face and brushing your teeth. I would imagine that during a day time trip the state of the bathroom wouldn't be too much of a concern.

It was an organised group trip so I'm not sure what class we were travelling but I am fairly certain it would have been 2nd class.

It probably also makes some sort of difference depending which country is running the trains. The one I caught was obviously a Russian train, but perhaps there are Finnish train options for your route to Helsinki? I am not sure about this however.

Regardless, I'm sure you'll have a fabulous time. Even at night, gazing out my window at the vast expanses of Russia was something I won't forget in a hurry!

Thanks for the info Frostyev & Garfield found out it is the fast train & that there is a 3rd class so 2nd should be OK. I'm sure we will find somethimg to spend the extra $400 on without much effort. Thanks again.

In addition to the posts, the condition of the washroom will depend to some extend on the type of the train. Take so called "firmenniy" train (like number 2, 4 or so) and you'll have a pleasant trip. Stay off the trains leaving 8-10 pm - these are the ones you'll hate.
