Train Travel concerns

I have read some of the posts on train travel and luggage safety. I will be traveling on a train from Rome to Naples and hadn't really thought about it until reading these posts.
Are the overhead luggage bins big enough to handle a 22-24 inch standard piece of luggage? I plan on traveling in 2nd class. There will be 4 of us traveling together. Each of us will have one bag to store. We will be traveling on the ES.
Any helpful hints will be appreciated.
Thanks

I did this exact train trip last October without incident, also traveling second class. There was plenty of room directly overhead for my 22" luggage and a tote bag.

I loved Napoli! Enjoy.

With 4 of you traveling you should not have a problem. Even if you store your luggage at the end of the car, you should be able to sit where you can keep an eye on it. If you are really worried, buy one of those cables that you can put through several pieces of luggage. That will make it almost impossible for anyone to "walk off" with a bag. Lock all the zip compartments, even the little outside ones, and keep your small carry-ons with you. At least you will have someone to watch your stuff while you go to the bathroom! (That's the worst problem of traveling alone, in my opinion.)
PS I am only 5'3" and getting my suitcase into the overhead bin is a huge hassle for me, whether it fits or not!

you will have no problem: overhead, underseats and open closets in most cars

I travelled by train all over Italy last Oct. and there was no way I could lift my 22" over my head into the overhead bin, even it would fit, which I don't think it would. I saw lots of bigger duffle type bags up there, and 19" suitcases, but they really are not very big. In the compartments the bins are a little larger, but I found it much easier to just sit it by my legs, luckily, the compartments were not full. We also cabled out suitcases together at the end of the car on our longer trips - Venice-Rome. It is a hassle, but so worth it.
