Train Travel Advice in Germany?
My husband and I are planning to do a train trip through some portions of Germany that he served in the Army back in the 1960's. He wants to go to Regensburg, Landshut, Berchtesgaden and Garmisch. Since I don't want to drive, we are going by train.
Would love to have some comments and suggestions as we have never done train travel before in Europe so that this will be our trip of a lifetime.

Oh, so much to say, but I will leave the bulk of that to the mre experienced German travel posters. Also, you might want to put Germany and your other cities into the "search" here and also get a book or two.
I took my mom to Germany and we toured from Munich, Mosel, Rothenburg and more - all by train. Their train service is excellent and widespread . However, go to the deutsche bahn website for specific cities, timetables, pricing, etc.
Try:
Www.bahn.de. Look for the English option if you need it. One of the Best websites for not only German trains but much of Europe.
I wish you lots of fun on your trip of a lifetime! And yes, It can be done by train, ubahn, bus and supplemented with taxis as needed.

Do you drive in the US? If so, driving around in the places in Germany that you listed is very similar. IMO, getting to Garmisch and Berchtesgaden are much easier driving than by train.
Either way you go, don't be surprised if your SO doesn't recognize very much from the 1960's. Western Germany has been essentially rebuilt and has greatly expanded since the 1960's. I did a similar trip for the same reason about 25 years ago and was very surprised (and disappointed)...
Have a good time, and remember there has been a lot of inflation since 1960...

Your destinations are all in Bavaria. You can use the Bayern Ticket daypass (26€/day for 2 adults) to move between towns and from/to the airport by train. The pass is good after 9 am on weekdays, at any hour on Sat or Sun. You can travel all you like on the local and regional trains with this daypass. Details are here:
