Train to Sorrento

Hi travellers! I am looking at booking a train from Rome (Termini ) Station to Naples then on to Sorrento for 1 night in September. I was looking at booking a Trenitalia city line train or the frecce, then going on to Sorrento for the day maybe go to Capri or a cruise around Sorrento ? Stay the night at a hotel or bnb in Sorrento. The next day go to Pompeii for a few hours , then from there go back to Termini Rome by a reginale train as we wont be in a hurry to go back as we will staying in Rome for 2 more nights. Or do I book a fast train to return? Not sure if there will be seats on the regionale train as I don't believe you can book these? is it just first in gets a seat?

We were going to do a daytrip by bus but thought too much time would be wasted driving and wanted to see Sorrento as well. All help will be appreciated
Thanks

On regionale, there is no limit on the number of people getting on the train and choose whichever seats are available.

Why don't you look at www.trenitalia.com for options? Not only Regionales take 2:45 vs 1:10 for Freccia trains, Regionales don't run that often -- about once every two hours vs. twice an hour for Freccia.

I am sure what help you can get from others. It really is how much time savings and not having to choose a travel time, if you don't want to buy a travel time specific advance discount tickets, mean to you. Others have different time/cost/freedom equilibrium. For me, it is quite a hassle to travel to Italy, so an opportunity to gain almost two hours during the middle of the day for few Euro bills would be a not to be missed opportunity. But others who can easily travel to Italy would probably gain less value from the same incremental hours.

Regional trains are slow and yes, no seat bookings. If you use trenitalia.com you can get reasonably priced tickets in advance for the high speed rail which will get you to Naples in just over an hour.
There is also the inter-city service which has reserved seats but is cheaper than the high speed. It is a good compromise and also follows the coastline some of the way, so a more scenic route.

The train that might be crowded is the local from Naples to Sorrento. This can be SRO depending on the specific train/time of day.

What are you calling a city line train? Never heard of that. Trenitalia has Frecce, IC and regional trains. The IC and regional really don't have any amenities.

You can book regional trains on Trenitalia, but only seven days in advance. There is no point as there are no discounts for regional trains and no reserved seating.

The local train between Naples/Pompeii/Sorrento is similar to riding a subway. Squeeze on and hope you can find a seat. No advance tickets.
