Reposting on the Ireland forum...
My husband would really like to see Dublin when we are visiting Ireland this June.
Dublin wasn't originally on our itinerary. We are staying near Cashel for a three nights so I was thinking maybe one day we could take an early morning train ride from Thurles that would get us in Dublin before 11:00am. The train ride might be a nice way of seeing a different part of the countryside. We could spend about 8 hours in Dublin before we would need to take the train back. Is it worth it?

The train is an easy way to get into Dublin. The views from the train aren't all that interesting, but it's comfortable. Hopefully, Ireland's new fleet of trains will be operating on that route when you travel.
The train will arrive at Heuston station which is quite a hike from city centre...consider taking a cab or the LUAS train from the station.
An overnight would be better, but you can squeeze a fair amount in just one day. You'll need to be pretty focused... deciding if you are there to sightsee, shop, eat or a little of all three.
The Hop On/Off Bus will give a good snapshot of the city.
Thanks Yesiree!
I'm pretty sure we can do it. Just wondering if anyone else ever tried it. We flew to NYC once for a day and had a ball just shopping and having lunch/dinner. I think we will look into the hop on/off bus.
I personally don't care if we go so 8 or 9 hours is plenty for me. Plus taking the train will give DH a break from all of the driving.
Sorry for the 2nd post, it didn't initially appear on the Ireland forum. I guess I need to be a little more patient
